demo of new song - feedback is welcome

Post by Izvestia » Wed Jun 09, 2010 2:20 pm

I have nearly finished a new song and I'm not sure how to end it. Feedback and ideas are welcome plus any other thoughts. It hasn't been mixed yet.

Maybe its just my ADD, but personally i think the intro is far too long. Maybe limit the intro to like 30 seconds to 1 minute. I also found myself waiting too long for the snare and bass drum to come in. I think you have all the elements of a good song it just needs to be shortened in a couple areas. If you had like a 30 second intro and then dropped into the part at 2 minutes it would keep us ADD people around for the rest of the song. As far as an ending... maybe use the intro again for like 15 seconds then fade out? Hope this helps!

Welcome Izvestia. Jacks comments are spot on of the intro length. Three and a half mins to wait for the meat to come in is definitely too long. The track has plenty of space to add other elements as well unless you were going for minimal. This is a very good foundation for a nice track. See what you can do to improve it and make it more interesting and exciting. Thanks for sharing.

I like the beat you are working with, very pleasing to listen to.
I agree with jharling and tlennon, the intro either needs to be shortened or you need a few more points of interest to hold our attention. And I'm not sure that the segment between 4:14-5:18 really adds anything new to the track.
I think you've got some interesting, worthy layers laid down, though. I look forward to hearing the final edit.
Thanks!

Thanks for all the feedback - it helped a lot.

I went back to the track and made adjustments and think it's finished now so I can start mixing. I've posted it on SC if you want to listen: http://soundcloud.com/izvestia/new-song-demo

Thanks,

Much better intro Iz and probably best you start mixing. I still think the kick doesn't come in soon enough but that's just my taste.

You've made a lot of changes! The shorter length is a good change.
I can hear that you are enjoying Abelton, no doubt.
As you mix, break up the drum samples in that last minute for interest, maybe?
Just a listener's perspective, though. I'm eager to hear the mix.

Thanks for all the feedback. I'll be mixing the song in the next two days and will post it on Soundcloud. Yeah Ableton is good to work with

Hey Izzy, you could have given us the link...

The mix sounds pretty clean at this point. After all the time you've spent on it, don't you feel like you've learn a lot?

I'd say the intro is still too long. I'd add the bass drum in at about 30 sec in. You can cut it during the quiet part at 1:20 for effect, but if this is supposed to be played at a club there is a minute and a half of ambiance that if used incorrectly could result in a max exodus of the dance floor.

Ok but it isn't meant to be played in a club and the mix is supposed to be clean

My 5 cent: The intro is not too long, but it needs more variation. The mix is clean and sounds good, but i would widen up the stero field after the intro. I listened on my earphones and everything has been centered in my head.
