Is there a way you can play a clip by itself without the arrangement starting up?

Im not at home to check but I thought launching a clip in session starts arrangement?

it starts arrangement..

either start the play point of arrangement further into the track (i.e. where there is silence) or loop a section of arrangement with no audio in it (i use a play marker mapped to a hotkey for this if i really need to have info in arrangement left intact)

I have read the manual and I can't just use the session for what I'm doing because lots of tracks need to start at the same time which would mean pressing lots of clip launches at the same time which is impractal as you only have so much room on a control surface.

I basically want to do loads of messing around with various clips and then bang the arrangement in after.

Easy,create a marker at start of arrangement, and create a marker after arrangement.
start fiddling your clips at marker 2, and when done, jump to marker 1.

It seems you didn't really read the manual or followed the tutorials; because just for that purpose the 'scenes' were setup.

Every track is vertical, every scene is horizontal. Which can be triggered using the scene launch buttons at the right side of the screen.

From Live click "help -> read the live manual", now check the chapter "Session view" (chapter 7), item 2 ("Tracks and scenes"). That should clear everything up.


Edit: And as to your original question; No. Whenever you start a clip the arrangement also starts up (the global play button). You cannot override this so to speak, but the session view will take priority over the arrangement view.

iow; if you have 2 tracks which contain both arrangement material and some clips in session view then starting a clip in session view will disable sound playback from the arrangement.

Yeah sorry I do know about how scenes work, bad example. Basically I need the arrangement running as it's a pre planned live show rather than a DJ set and some elements will be fixed to a set timeline so it's always the right length. I think that looping a section of silence should do the trick though, cheers.

Hmm, just for the record..

Keep in mind that you can use the arrangement parallel to your session environment, depending on how you set stuff up of course. For example; say you have 4 audio tracks. The first 2 contain "arrangement data" so to speak. The last 2 contain session view clips. As long as those tracks don't overlap then everything will be played. So as soon as you'd launch a clip the arrangement is also started.

Dunno if this helps (it is kinda a hack afterall), perhaps I don't understand completely what you want, but maybe the info helps somehow (at least the topic is bumped so that others might look at it again ).

Yeah thats what I'm doing, running 4 tracks in the arrangement, drums, bass etc and then launching clips over the top as the arrangement plays in the other 4 tracks. It's just for doing different intro's to the overall set each time so I can then start the set after I've finished messing around with the intro. i think looping a silent section at the start will work and then jump to a cue point to start the arrangement will do what I'm looking for. Actually I've changed my mind and am just gonna do everything from session view, more versatility, will just have to be a good time keeper
