Re: Zoom R16
Bump.
Anyone use it? How about the Tascam DP 008?
I'm interested in these mainly for playback & casual mixing with headphones when out & about -like at the beach or in the woods- places I wouldn't want to drag a computer.
They have some drawbacks, such as imported files can only be 8 alpha-numeric characters long, which means having to rename all the files I drag in.

I was thinking about one of these machines but didn't get to look at any yet. I will post here if I find out any more
Re: Zoom R16
Not bad. Motorized faders would have been better.

Re: Zoom R16
Another cool thing about the Zoom R16 is that it can double as a control surface -it's obviously limited, but it's a nice extra. More gear should do this!
Re: Zoom R16
looks very nice. has anyone got to play with one? if it really does work well as a controller too that would be cool. i wonder how it sounds though.
Re: Zoom R16
Depending on your requirements a Korg SR1 might be of interest:

I am going to wait a few weeks until I can look at these before making a purchase. I am after something for making quick multitracks using guitars and bass...

Re: Zoom R16
i got one about a week ago.
likes:
portable: took the r16 and an 8-channel snake to a customer's house. put it on the table, plugged in his X3 live (in stereo), dr-880 drum/bass (each in stereo), ran the outputs to his PA so that he can hear it the same way he's accustomed to.
simple: hardly requires the manual. create project, arm tracks, set levels, hit record.
need a second take? bounce tracks (i probably should lookup how to record multiple takes on the same track), rewind, hit record. repeat 6 times. that's a wrap.
affordable: $325 shipped (prolly cause they're about to ship the r24). 4-4gb kingston class-4 sdhc cards-$32 shipped. ability to record 8-tracks with a slim, light-weight, battery operated deck - priceless.
wishlist: spdif: even though the sd card is easy to remove, i wish it had spdif out.
speaking of the sdhc port cover: it's fully removable (meaning that it will eventually be lost). should be hinged or tethered.
dislikes: strange ableton import behavior when i import the wav files into ableton, they're all different lengths (speeds) and out of alignment.
so i loaded cubase le 4 (ugh!), imported the track and they're all aligned(!?). rendered each track from cubase and imported into ableton - still out of alignment and timing!
DL'd & installed reaper, imported tracks - all aligned and sync'd. haven't rendered each track from reaper but i'm really getting frustrated.
i need to start engineering and producing!

Re: Zoom R16
Sounds like you had warping on in Live. Just turn it off for the imported files.
Re: Zoom R16
thanks, massenmedium. i'll check that tonight and report back.massenmedium wrote:Sounds like you had warping on in Live. Just turn it off for the imported files.
Re: Zoom R16
massenmedium, thanks a ton.
the strangest thing to me is how ableton decided to warp various files from a single take of a single multi-track project?
warp bass track = yes
warp guitar = no
warp drums = no
(with no consistency between instruments in different projects...)
how the #$%^& did it decide that on its own? (a rhetorical question directed at no one in particular now that i know the workaround)
