PS3 or XBOX360 ????

Hi,

I'll probably buy a game console one day, to share fun times with the wife before we get some kids

I own an old PS1 that I really loved at the times (tekken 3, wipe out 2010...)

I don't want a wii, I 'd like a "real "console...

I don't need any network playing.

I have a 24" monitor with HDMI input.

I'm really out of the gamers universe since years now, and I didn' follow the news,

I'd like you to advise me, share opinions, about these 2 consoles??

games I'd like to play:

doom likes, killzone 2...
rally games, wipe out style games
rayman origins, kerby, games like that

EDIT : I just put a 3rd choice in the poll, for custom game PCs... even If I went the mac route about 4 years ago and I don't really want to get a new PC..

Viva Piñata. If you don't like this game it's proof of a lack of soul.

I don't think you can't go far wrong with getting an xbox, good timing with the fancy new one's out now.

it's not a concern for me, just stated "with my wife", but it is not a criteria for this possible purchase. She likes tekken, rally stuff, Doom likes, and, yes, as a girl, she likes cute things a lot too.

wii is definitely not for me, I tried it at least 3 times, and I don't really dig it. I want real games, not blinky blipy bop bop tiny tiny cuty mini games... and I want classical controllers (I liket the ps1 controllers a lot)

anyway, thanks to all for your advices, for now... that's quite 50/50 in the comments, but the xbox leads in the poll...

Another discussion will have to be done on the different models... there seems to be lots of different Xbox and PS3 packs now on the market...

price of games...

I can see games prices from 20 to 99$ for both ps3 and xbox, can we say prices are the same on the 2 platforms??

got another question:

My monitor is a 24" 16/10, with VGA and HDMI port, is it OK with both the ps3 and the xbox? or do I need an HD TV to use the HDMI...? (because I'm not gonna buy a TV, I got rid of mine since now more than 6 years and don't regret it...=) And if I can't use the hdmi, is it possible to plug the xbox or ps3 with a VGA cable to the monitor???

I also saw some xbox don"t have hdmi ports... and that their HDs and DVD players were really LOUD & noisy....???

for now I understand I can buy (xbox speaking):

-Xbox Elite around 200 euros (120gb HD, hdmi port and cable included)
-Xbox Arcade (seems there is no hdmi..., only 256mb memory, no HD)

BTW, is the HD really needed??

=> lots of you advice the xbox 360 > ps3, I'd like to know why.. (price? quality? number of available games?...?)

That's the pure beauty of Viva Piñata, kids could enjoy it and not a lot can happen but it's also one of the hardest games i've ever played. It scales between the two, it just came to mind when you asked because my girlfriend played it in a completely different way to me. It's a modern classic and refreshing from all the shooting-things-in-the-face games.

As for the new xbox, they've basically just refined it. They had a few issues with the older models, had a 'quality' moment. The new one has 250GB HD and HDMI so will work with your monitor (and it's silent apparently).

ok, I was absolutely wrong about my monitor,

here are its specs:

NEC MULTISYNC EA241WM-BK
TFT - 24'' - 1920 x 1200 60 Hz - 400 cd m2 - 1000:1 - 5 ms - 0.27 mm - DVI-D, VGA

so it's not HDMI.

1) I'll have to get an HDMI to DVI adapter cable, do you guys use that kind of trick? is it OK, and isn't there too much video quality loss??

2) the resolution is 1920 x 1200, and the xbox and ps3 only output 1080 max for the vertical side, how will it work with my 1200 monitor??? (I read the console adapts to the screen resolution, so... will the console crash??

)

another question is : hdmi is said to route video AND audio, how will I be able to route the audio separately to my HiFi system???

I just saw an interesting package :

Xbox 360 Elite 120gb + (Pure & Lego Batman) or (GTA4) => 199 euros.

seems the most affordable for the new line of xboxes (I don't know if 250gb HD is really needed for me...???)

You can get VGA cables for them, and they have Red/White phono type leads for you're audio. Most games aren't even outputted at more than 720p, I wouldn't worry about it too much. The resolution will pretty much take care of itself. Before I got my nice tele I used a monitor on VGA and it looked great. If you are able to connect it to the net there are some great download games pretty cheap too, Monkey Island 2 has been re-made and is due out next week for example. (Nostalgic wonder)

Lol, no. There are far more games that are PS3 only that are worth buying. (Uncharted 2, Ratchet & clank, and MGS4 for example).
