When I click record, the sound of patch changes

Hello,

The issue that I am having is this change in sounds whenever I hit the record button on the clip itself and it begins to record. I will have a pad running in the VST and all of a sudden when i decide to go with this certain sound and I hit record to get something down the sound will suddenly change to something completely different. I have to basically manually record it with the sound I dont want, go back to my vst change the preset again to what I wanted. Does this make sense? Anyone know if this is normal or know how to help? Any input is appreciated.

Sounds like you may be recording Program Changes in your clips. Click the little "E" in the lower left corner of the clip window to open up the Envelopes section. Then look in the envelopes panel that opens up for MIDI program change automations (marked with red dot). This can happen if you are taking MIDI from "All ins" and you have more than one MIDI device connected.

So for example, if you had a keyboard and a drumpad both connected and only want to record MIDI from the keyboard, then you would want to change the MIDI IN on the track your recording on to receive from the keyboard only.

I used to have a crappy old Evolution keyboard that had some dicky buttons on it that used to constantly send program changes and this used to happen. It sounds like one of your devices has a dodgy button/knob, or you have something resting on the program change button(s)

oh that sounds like it will help. I will just go ahead and make sure that the inputs are no longer on auto and on the direct midi controller instead.

I'm having the exact same problem except I'm using Reason to create the audio.

When I hit record in ableton on a clip it just totally changes the sound.
