Yes despite it all isn't it up to the manager to put right whatever is wrong, and Capello failed to do that? I'm a bit miffed at all the criticism of Rooney, his touch was poor but he didn't get much of the ball. I believe John Terry was to directly to blame for at least two of the goals against Germany, the first of which was a bigger howler than poor Rob Green's. its the same conversation we all had 4 years ago.
the simplest explanation is usually THE explanation. the reason why are players cant turn it on internationally like they do week in week out in the EPL is that the foreign players in that league make them look good. they havent got the skills. they didnt loose their first touch over night. they havent got it.
out of the entire team ashley cole would be the only one who would cut it abroad. players like lampard receive the ball from players who make space [foreigners] and that lets him run at the opposition and take a shot. put 11 english players on the field and the average quality shines through. look how owen hargreaves changed as a player after spending time abroad.
it pains me to say it but that all it is. not good enough. couple this with the way the game is played that style of shock and awe rush football doesnt cut it.
so the players are crying out for 4 5 1. really. awesome. so we cobble together a team to play that formation out of the current squad and one injury or suspension and your screwed.
the FA needs to man up and start making some big changes. of course they wont. leaving the only option as private a la lottery money and overhaul that caused in british olympic sports. private academies funded from public and private money. feeding clubs and taking a cut from the sale of young players. coupled with internships abroad to learn proper footballing technical skills.

Well we'll have to differ about Ashley Cole, I thought he was dire, never sure where he should be and not covering the breaks properly, though whether FC gave him confusing instructions or because of his lack of brain is unknown.
England did not fail against Germany and the USA just because the players lack skills, or the tactics were wrong, or the wrong team was selected (Heskey! I 'm sure I was ranting against him at the last two world cups!) or a bad refereeing decision or the ball, although all of those elements are undoubtedly contributory factors. Players made schoolboy errors, choked at times, and if anything, seemed to have too much to think about tactics-wise. Mostly they are simple folk and can only think about two or three things at a time, on or off the pitch.
It is up to Capello to get the best out of the team, however poor they might be, and the fact is he failed, we have all seen England play much better than this, even as recently as the qualifying. So Capello must go. And John Terry with him, and any other players who will be too old for the Euros in 2012.

England don't play much shock and awe kick and rush football, this is a red herring on the part of someone like Beckenbauer with his mind games and something the lemming like press echo as they have very few intelligent writers who don't follow the hype. All of these same writers calling for Capello's head were ready to make him next in line to the throne 6 months ago ...
Unlike the Graham Taylor regime etc of Geoff Thomas and Carlton Palmer, we don't see a lot of pinging the ball 70 yards forward at every opportunity.
England don't PASS the ball as well as some other teams like Spain and Argentina, but they don't do a lot of route one stuff either. Their strength is quick play using the wings, something we didn't do effectively except in the game vs Slovenia (and part of the USA game 2nd half) - Johnson was dire defending, but he linked up well with Milner in attack in that game.
The only full backs worth their salt so far are Maicon, Sergio Ramos and Fabio Coentrao all of whom look better attacking than defending. Ashley Cole is not as good an attacking full-back but is better defensively than these guys - it also doesn't help that for England he never knows who will be playing ahead of him, and Gerrard was played there most games and Stevie G is not left footed and more effective in the middle, in spite of this, Gerrard was probably the best performer at this WC. If there is one criticism of Capello, it's that he didn't take Adam Johnson who is left footed and was in great form, or even play Joe Cole on the left. Rooney and Barry were awful and you have to wonder if they were truly fit, both having suffered bad injuries near the end of the season.
The players looked knackered. The other players at the WC who play in the Prem all look knackered too, Torres, Evra, Sagna, Pienaar, Yakubu etc all disappointing.
