Didn't think No Country was bad, not much of a stretch for them though, a little bit of Blood Simple and Fargo, but yeah, it should have been for Fargo IMO.LoopStationZebra wrote:dhilsabeck wrote: Kindof like a consolation oscar, a la the Coen Bros for "No Country for Old Men."

decent movie. pretty typical though of the australian population. if you ever plan to visit australia, pack a bat and a gun because you'll get bashed and spit on as soon as you get off the plane. bunch of singlet wearing thong toting alcoholic racist wife beating arseholes, the lot of 'em.nikulo wrote:anyone saw this one?

That's exactly how I imagine Russell Crowe to be in real life.plantaginate wrote:singlet wearing thong toting alcoholic racist wife beating arseholes, the lot of 'em.

I thought No Country was a tad disappointing. I'm going to be a dick and say Cormac McCarthy's book was better because it was. Javier Bardem did a fine job as Anton Chigurh but in the book he was waaaay more interesting.Machinesworking wrote:Didn't think No Country was bad, not much of a stretch for them though, a little bit of Blood Simple and Fargo, but yeah, it should have been for Fargo IMO.LoopStationZebra wrote:dhilsabeck wrote: Kindof like a consolation oscar, a la the Coen Bros for "No Country for Old Men."

I thought the oscar was kind of a kick to the nuts to the Coens who have churned out some of the most consistently interesting and different movies of our time. They finally take on someone else's story and they win an oscar.
Fargo, Lebowski, O Brother, Raising Arizona, take your pick. I think all of them are superior to No Country.

I just can't stomach that dude. Even in his serious roles I just see him as a raging asshole.plantaginate wrote:add in phone tosser and it's perfect match.

I thought the film version of No Country was a hamfisted effort. Mildy interesting, but blech.
Oddly enough, I thought the film version of The Road was pretty good. Much better than I thought it would be. Sure it lacked the extreme bleakness of the book, and wasn't emotionally detached enough, but it was still pretty bleak and well done. Even the wife scenes - which of course were not part of the novel and could have gone horribly wrong - were well done and in fact added to the narrative on-screen in a good way.
Speaking of film versions, I finally got around to seeing East of Eden recently.
Wretched. WRETCHED.
Method acting was just starting to come into it's own during this time, and the film is evidence enough that every actor involved - except Burl Ives, lol - simply didn't understand it one bit. The overacting of emotions; as if these people didn't realize that they WEREN'T on stage and in fact making a movie.... Wow. Painful to watch. Absolutely painful.

OK didn't notice that it was based on a book.LoopStationZebra wrote:[

Now I'll probably read the book though.
Honestly though how many film versions are on par with the book?
Only example I can think of is Wiseblood? The Shinning was pretty good too.
Also a round of haterade for english language versions of foreign films and remakes of classics.
Fuck the remakes of:
Psycho,
Texas Chainsaw Massacre,
The Vanishing,
La Femme Nikita,
This list is endless....

I figure if people aren't paying attention to Terry Gilliam or David Lynch I can't force them to.fingerprince wrote:How can you go ten pages without mentioning eraserhead!

It's like mentioning Eddie Van Halen as far as great guitar players.
With M, Metropolis, or 400 Blows, Streetcar Named Desire, Rebel Without a Cause, Nigh of the Iguana and plenty of other great movies
from long ago, it's daunting, you have to name the few that come to mind don't you?
It's like saying name every record from the 60's and 70's you like!
Mike Leigh I mentioned Naked, Secrets and Lies, and pretty much all his movies are worth watching.

I thought most of the Gilliams went without saying. For what it's worth, I really liked The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus.

Exactly. I mean, does one really need to mention films like The Godfather?

I rather like these lists in that they bring out films that you might not have heard of, or have heard of but needed a kick in the ass to see, etc.

On that line Faces is sooo good, I think it's underrated in his repertoire maybe because the theme is simpler than Woman or Killing, which are pretty deep on some levels.LoopStationZebra wrote:Machinesworking wrote:

Faces is basically the dissolving of a marriage including the 'wife' after a marital argument about getting a divorce going to a GoGo club, I'm not saying more, but yeah, it's freaking awesome!

Also, if you haven't seen Naked, that's a must IMO!
