How to adjust speed/pitch without warpping. Just like a DJ.

Post by elektroman » Sun Jul 04, 2010 4:55 am

I'm fairly new to warpping and speed/pitch adjustments within Live. So i don't know much. I know that when you insert an mp3 file for example. It automatically slices and warps it to suit the projects BPM/temp.
What i want to do is insert an audio file either short or a full mp3, and be able to adjust its speed/pitch just like you would on a speed adjust on CDJ's/turntables. So the faster you make it the higher the pitch goes.
So in turn what i want to achieve is, have 2 tracks side by side and beat-match them together, just like you would on an ordinary DJ setup.
How is this done, and is it even possible in Live.

you change the warp mode/style or whatever its called from beats which is the one which keeps the pitch to another one theres about 4 options in a drop down menu i dont know what each of them do but if u hover your mouse over it and the help thingo is on it might tell you what they all do. this is all located in the clip window of your audio file

You can't avoid warping, but the warp mode which enables this is called "Re-Pitch". Try also reading the manual, it helps.

You can't beat-match live in ableton. The project speed will count for every warped-audio & midi clip on every track and if you do not warp a track it will play at its original speed.

What you'd need to do is pre-warp the songs (wouldn't really rely on live's automatic warping) and then select re-pitch as warp-mode.
Then the songs will be pitched like when playing vinyl, but you don't have the possibilty to ajust the speed of the tracks/clips independently.

Thanks for all the replies.
I am not trying to beat-match and DJ on the fly using Live.
I'm creating a a megamix, compiled with portions of several songs. So i'm inserting bits and pieces from each song into my project. But i'd like those clips to remain un-warpped, yet simply sped up or slowed down, just like on a vinyl, to suit projects tempo while also adjusting the pitch up or down, once again just like it would be on a vinyl deck.
They're all trance/house songs, and difference in bpm is minimal. Theyre all in the 130-142bpm range. So warpping, works fine in this scenario. But warpping keeps the original pitch of the song. Which i do not want.
Hope that made sense.

Use repitch warp mode. Also make sure there are no warp markers within the track - remnove all except the first and the last - posisiotn the first and last as appropriate for sync purposes.

You can, but not easily between two tracks within ableton, you can beatmatch ableton to something else by means of tempo controls and nudge controls - normal way to pick up if using ableton for djing/live sets and need to pickup from another DJ.
Nothing to see here - move along!

This might not be so appealing since you won't see the waveform in the clip, but you could put the sample in a simpler or sampler and use the pitch and fine-tune controls to manipulate the playback speed...

Thanks again for the replies.
Re-pitch is somewhat in a sense of what i was looking for and it works fine for my purpose!
I guess i should RTFM!

What you do is turn off Warping, then to speed up/slow down the track, detune the track, the pitch will raise/fall. So yes, it is possibly to beatmatch traditionally within Live without Warping.

adjusting the pitch with warp off makes the track skip. so no, you don't want that.
and adjusting the clip's tempo with warp in pitch mode also makes the track skip. you don't want that either.
both methods are actually useless for on-the-fly beatmatching.
