Del Bosque is a great manager and only Pedro cocked up his mighty plan a little. How brave a manager do you havwe to be to rest a striker on the bench for an extra midfield player knowing that it's going to stifle your top goalscorer, Villa, a bit? Brave as fark, I'd suggest.

But he knew it would work, the canny walrus-like manager.

So, what do you do after the late goal? You know Germany have to push forward and you're going to get chances on the break so...give your out-of-form lack of-confidence striker a go. On comes Torres and within 2 minutes, just as Del Bosque predicts, Pedro breaks with Torres in acres of space and he surely would have scored doing wonders for his confidence for the final except that Pedro goes for glory and cocks it up.

OK, it made no difference to the results but it would have made a huge difference to Torres and Spain in the final.
