BREAKBEAT production tutorial in ABLETON
So another NOOB question:))
lets discuss how to produce breakbeat:
1) how to compress kick drum / shnare / bassline
2) how to EQ kick drum / shnare / bassline
any tips? suggestions ? ways of doing it so kick drum / shnare and bassline are sounding boomier, something like Aquasky / Broken Robot way...
its the main problem in my productions...i cant figure out how to compress and eq this things right.
please help!

Re: BREAKBEAT production tutorial in ABLETON
The vast majority of breakbeat (Nu Skool at least) uses samples - by and large from the Vengeance Electro & Club Sound Collections - so just tweak samples to fit other elements rather than reprocess etc.

Re: BREAKBEAT production tutorial in ABLETON
You need to slice up a funk break and layer it with kiks and snares from your vengeance "cd".
USe Slice to midi and clean up the funk break up with subtractive eq on the ringy hits and bass filled hi hats
Re arrange to your liking. Then add the kik and snare layer.
Do this many many times until you get better beats!
Luckily Ableton gives you maximum flexibilty for doing beats this way in drum racks, but I suggest you use recycle to slice the funk breaks, as IMO slicing is fiddly here. (check my sig if that makes any sense to you)

ctrl + left/right = select transient
ctrl + shift + left/right = select between transients
ctrl + space = play selection

Re: BREAKBEAT production tutorial in ABLETON
Picked up a snare trick from a finger lickin' tutorial back a few years:
use three snares. low, mid and clap.
have each on its own audio track.
turn quantise off and have the clap hit just before the beat, the mid on the beat and the low just after.
In the tutorial they were in fact using logics track delay plug-in to achive this and I'm sure there are many ways to roll it with live but I found this method really hands-on and great results.
another little gem is to have an open hat hit on the last 16th note before the kick 'on the one'. gives the break some urgency.
Much fatness.

shnare sounds better without "H": snare
Re: BREAKBEAT production tutorial in ABLETON
If you remember that it was Logic track delay, do you alsoGuff Tong wrote: turn quantise off and have the clap hit just before the beat, the mid on the beat and the low just after.

remember how much "just before" and "just after" was in ms ?
Re: BREAKBEAT production tutorial in ABLETON
Boy I miss that Logic sample delay since I moved to Live full time. But this is a pretty good replacement:

My bad - was in fact logics' Sample Delay plug in - 0 left - 110 right. (say 40 milliseconds in real terms)Coupe70 wrote:If you remember that it was Logic track delay, do you alsoGuff Tong wrote: turn quantise off and have the clap hit just before the beat, the mid on the beat and the low just after.

Edit:
The original tutorial by The Finger Lickin Allsatars seems to be featured in a CM mag special out now. Link:

must say, its one of the best breakbeat tutorials i've come across.

Hi netwarrior,
I've put together a Live set that uses the default Raw drum clip preset, and modifies it slightly for more of a breakbeat feel.
I hope it helps you:
