Recording a skype interview with ableton and soundflower?
Hi guys...
i've been using live for a few years now. Work has got me doing some interviews and I figure I can use skype and soundflower with ableton to record both my end, and the other callers. Has anybody done this?
I know just about anything can be done with re-routing using the soundflower and ableton duo I just need some pointers.

im not sure how you will be able to route skypes output and the mic input into ableton at the same time -
i used to do radio interviews over the phone by routing the headphone out on my computer to my edirol r-09 (and listening to skype by plugging headphones into the r-09) and record my own voice into ableton via a mic and soundcard
i asked a friend about this tonight and he wondered if you could set an aggregated device in your audio preferences on your computer - i dont know anything about aggregated devices so i cant comment
sorry this isnt much help .. but im gonna have a go at this tomorrow

i did this a couple of times (recording iterviews over skype) and always ended up recording via a second device (zoom or md-recorder), using a microphone to record my questions and the headphone out of the computer for the answers over skype. There miht be some clever way to do it inside the box, I think I once read something about a skype application exactly for that, but I did never find it and work it out.

Re: Recording a skype interview with ableton and soundflower?
thanks heaps.
i have heard of people being able to do this with soundflower (http://cycling74.com/products/soundflower/) and with all the different input names and different input stuff in ableton (clearly i'm not an audio engineer yet) it would be fairly easy to route 2 channels together, such as the skype output and mic input.
my theory was:
1. in ableton, i'd make the input the soundflower 2 ch.
2. in skype make the output soundflower 2ch
3. in audio settings, make the input my mic as usual, but output soundflower 2ch
4. in ableton, make the output my regular audio device which goes out to the headphones

thing is that you probably can't route your mic simultaneously to skype and soundflower/live.
If you can, great, try it out. I didn't make it.

I'm wondering if this was figured out, I'm trying to do the same thing and wondered how the routing needed to be done to work. Did you use LineIn (a free app)?

unfortunately I haven't figured this out still. It should be fairly simple and would be really cool to do!
Re: Recording a skype interview with ableton and soundflower?
bit of a warning if using soundflower
i used it for something before - i think it was routing traktor into ableton but have nt used it for ages and rarely do
i did try to route something from youtube into abe a few weeks back and did nt have it set up right and i got this very loud tone blast through my laptop speakers which i could nt switch off and i ended up having to restart the laptop - made me jump a mile
i think it was something to do with the way i had it set up within core audio

Re: Recording a skype interview with ableton and soundflower?
totally easy, you're on the right track.
make ableton's input soundflower (2 ch),ableton's output your speakers, and your computer's main output to soundflower (2 ch)
that way everything that comes out of your computer, except for things in ableton, will be piped into ableton. i use it allllll the time.

but this way your own voice won't be recorded. only the output of skype. If you do an interview you want your own voice recorded as well.Usedtobe wrote:totally easy, you're on the right track.

Re: Recording a skype interview with ableton and soundflower?
Easy as sunday morning peeps. Aggregate Device is the key here (assuming we're all on Macs)
1. Create an Aggregate Device in Audio Midi Settings selecting Soundflower first, then Hardware input and output (the order in which you select them will determine channel numbers in Live).
2. In Skype prefs, select Soundflower for 'out' and microphone for 'in'.
3. In Live's prefs select Aggregate Device as your Input and activate all channels.
4. Create an audio track and call it 'Dave' and select inputs 1-2 (which should be Soundflower).
5. Create an audio track and call it 'Steve' and select inputs 3-4 (which should be your mic).
Job's a good'un!

as a skype recorder i'd recomend http://www.imcapture.com/IMCapture_for_Skype/
Re: Recording a skype interview with ableton and soundflower?
well damn...just did this as recommended above, but used Rogue Amoeba's "Line In" to route the internal mic to soundflower. Works like a charm, but you have to use headphones or else the feedback loop will kill your face.
