don't care for 'share'...

Post by 3dot... » Mon Jul 12, 2010 10:20 pm

title says it all...

if I wanna share something.. I can do it here.. or a thousand of other places..
or am I missing something...?

I'd rather have a feature that would allow me to jam online with forum users ... than jam offline over 'shared' content

I agree.I been doing tunes over skype, with screen share and file transfers.

Ohmstudio looks good, cant wait to try it out.

Seems like ableton bit off more than they could chew last year.
ctrl + left/right = select transient

ctrl + shift + left/right = select between transients

ctrl + space = play selection

Not that I'm overly disappointed that share didnt make it into 8.

But, I believe alot of people who bought Live 8 being under the impression that they would be gettin the share function should be asking for a partial refund from Ableton.

Hell yes man - You said it best. The technology is getting better but I think there's still work to be done nonetheless. They could make a more literal meaning to the name Ableton "Live" Shit would be hot son

The Share feature was one of the features I was really excited about in Live 8 and I am very disappointed that it did not materialize. However, I think Live 8 is fairly reasonably priced, and I know that sometimes, in software development, you end up promising a bit more than you can deliver (I'm a software developer, so I know what this can be like). I wouldn't want a refund for the missing feature. To me it is more important that Ableton can focus on the continued development on a great product rather than wasting their time sending people trivial amounts of money (which add up to non-trivial amounts and a lot of work for Ableton).

However, it would be interesting to figure out where this went wrong and if there may be some way to add this feature in a different way. Was it the server-side stuff that became unwieldly? If so, it might be possible to create an API that will enable third parties to implement a backend solution. Even just having support for shared storage might do it so people can use networked drives, WebDAV, Dropbox etc.

I've been "sharing" projets for a few years now. "Collect all and save" then zip the folder and upload to ftp. An ftp server with unlimited bandwidth is dirt cheap these days and super fast.

Yes, that sort of works, but it makes it a bit tricky to merge changes if people work on different "branches" of the project in parallell. If Ableton solved the problem for networked drives (or equivalent low level shared storage) then the synchronization of files could be handled outside of Live (with anything from networked drives, rsync, some software to sync with an FTP site or services such as Dropbox).

I'd be very interested in knowing exactly what challenges Ableton ran into with this.

I really like the idea of a share option. I would definitely use this just to move between Mac/PC for my Live projects.

For now, I either use box.net or transfer files via portable hard drives.

Exactly how I'm working at the moment, 2 of us are working on their part of a Live Set and we're gonna have to get together to make sure that we haven't overlapped or overmapped midi functions that interfere with each others work.. But in the mean time, Compress and upload to Server seems to be the only 'remote' way of doing it that works for me.
