I helped found reasonstation.net, and part of the reason I left was because the were so many whiny little bitches using cracked versions of the program complaining about people cheating on the voting system.
Edit: okay, maybe that's a little harsh, but all the l33t x$XX0rz were getting on my nerves

Over at the Cubase forums when someone posts a new song that they want critiqued they always start their subject line with "[Music]". For example, "[Music] New rock tune".
This makes it very easy to ignore these postings or actively seek them out - whatever your choice may be. It's better than one big thread b/c all of the critique is focused on the one track rather than jumbled between 40 different song postings. Also, you get a sense of how interesting the track is going to be by the number of replies. And, we don't need a new forum to do this.
I think the rating system is a great idea. There is definitely a problem with the critiques being way too nice at Cubase.net. Your friends and family are there to be nice. You should be able to come here and get an honest opinion. Of course, I think the honesty should include something constructive if possible. I must admit that there is some excellent constructive criticism over there. (By the way I haven't been back to the cubase forums, or even opened that program since I started my obsession with Live about two weeks ago)

i dont see any reason why ableton shouldnt provide a Live Music forum on here exactly the way montrealbreaks described it.
they're not hosting the files so bandwidth is not an issue
allowing a community of live users to develop, giving/getting critique on Live *specific* tracks only shows potential buyers what can be done with the program and encourages them to participate
its good marketing
also, it takes the web admin almost no time and effort to create a new forum, test it, even add special polling features.
also: do not agree that lumping the music in with the main forum is the way to go, doesnt do the concept or the music justice,
and the big 'check out my music thread' is the worst .. blah .. you cant get/give proper feedback in it, I never wade thru that thing trying to find out what people are doing, and i dont think many others do either.
whoever is championing this idea should write it up and send it directly to them, i would but i didnt grab this particular ball so im not about stealing it

Here is a few ideas for how this (let's call it the "Track Board" ) could be set up:
It'll be a separate section of the Ableton website.
[1] Posting a track.
Users post only one track at a time as a new entry on the board. Users cannot post more than 3 new track posts per day. When setting up a post, they must specify a genre for the track from a set list of genres. There is no repeat posting of the same track allowed.
Bitrate must be at least 96k. The post of the actual track is by way of a direct URL to www.yoursite.com/track.mp3. If they update the track at that URL, they should post a comment to say what changes they made.
No posting of long mixes (eg 40 minutes of tracks mixed sequentially with Live is not permitted). Users agree to post original compositions only; Ableton will not be responsible for plagiarised postings.
No posting of tracks that are declared "just a demo" or "unfinished" - you have to post tracks that you feel are very close to completion; close to what you'd go to the trouble of cutting to CD and distributing etc.
Tracks must be produced using Live as their core DAW (but can use any other hardware or software). If they wish to do so users can optionally describe how they made the track and what hard/software they used; or post any comments they like about the track.
Users can additionally post a jpeg or gif with the track. And they can maintain a personal logo/image to represent themselves within the Track Board.
Users posting tracks do not have to use their Forum ID to identify themselves. You can post as an alias.
[2] Listening & Voting
Other users can vote once and comment only twice on a track. But no further posting of comments will be permitted. (this is to prevent heated discussion threads/OTs/flame wars/unfair bumping by buddies) These can be carried out on the regular forum if necessary, but we want to keep the board and track comments clean and uncluttered.
The Track Board will show and can be sorted by track title, posting date, genre, creator-name, score and number of comments/votes from other users.
Users cannot listen to more than 5 posted songs by other users without voting on at least one of them.
Voting will be out of 10 in two categories (1) production quality, regardless of the quality of the composition (2) the composition itself, regardless of production quality. These scores are summed and divided by 20 to give the total user rating for the track.
_______
just ideas to give this a bit of shape. maybe some are unnecessary etc.
(some are not enforceable, but are sort of a code of practice to keep the standard high and not cluttered)

$0.02 I think the rating idea is interesting but requires a more formal process than might be generally preferred. On the other hand, a sticky with the guidelines is a great idea and suggested optional standard set of poll questions to ask when posting your music in a way that supports a uniform rating seems good too. Basically, if you turn it into a "chart" then there is a whole tangential scorekeeping process thing that gets tangled.
Also, btw, there is a kind of nice chart at http://musikliga.de that encompasses a lot of genres, it's fairly easy to join (there are some layers to navigate through first) and it's free, guidelines are reasonable and it allows you to post links to pre-hosted songs.

I agree with everything Anonymouse said, except for this point above. Sometimes, it's nice to get a fresh view on a work in progress. For instance "Hey guys, I have hit a brick wall on this track, any suggestions?" or something...anonymouse wrote:Here is a few ideas for how this (let's call it the "Track Board" ) could be set up:

Just a thought. I would dig having the opportunity to put 50% finished work up and maybe have somebody email me and ask for the .als to remix or finish what I started, and vice-versa.
my $0.02 anyways.
Regarding this request, I will send an email to the Abes to see what they think, and I'll link to this thread - which unfortunately, in hind sight I think it would have been good if it had a poll.
I have changed my username; Now posting as:

its got my vote deffinatley.... i was lookin at em411 the other night to post a sort of firstish mix but they want money to do it... which is understandable and is probably the only way they can do it , and is also cheaper than hosting it yourself............but............
i just didnt want to subscribe to it coz i dont think my music wouldn't really fit in over there.. they like it a bit glitchy or at least quite idmish..... i know theres probably a lot of em411ers on this site , no offence people... i like the site and a lot of the music is pretty good.
point is theres going to be a lot broader tastes in music... with one deffinate common demoniator all tracks will have been made with live....
Infact, this should be rule number one
1. all tracks must be made with live (or it should at least be a very nicely made request
)
time for me to start lookin at websapce .... anyone got any suggestions where to start?

there used to be a well cheesy "sig." here
Disagree. Dj mixes should be allowed as well as links to live pa sets. If there is a legal issue with allowing dj mixes that's fine, but live sets should be allowed. As long as the mp3 is hosted off site and the poster says hey, this mp3 is 70 minutes long then there is no problem.anonymouse wrote:s they made.
No posting of long mixes (eg 40 minutes of tracks mixed sequentially with Live is not permitted).
There should be no limitations to time.
I disagree with a lot of the rules, but especially the one above. Most of the others I disagree with because I think we are making it a little too complicated here.
I submit that all we need is an additional forum, exactly like general, or tips and tricks, only titled "post your music". Simple as that. If the person wants some sort of rating they can include a poll.
Genre, if the poster wishes to choose one, can be included in the post title. "[techno] track name"
If you'd like to check something out by a particular user then just search the music forum for their user name.
I do agree the track should be made with live.
BUMP I support this but I find it interesting hearing unfinished tracks and then the finished track SOMEtimes. remember Global Goon sticking up that class track (Office job) he was trying to get a more techno feel too and he asked for feedback? That was really interesting and I think I have four versions of that track and you can hear the man think. http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic. ... ght=#95307
A lot of catagories you'd have to grade someone in might put me off a little when all I want to say is (for example) the voice is too quiet.
Is someone going to approach ableton with this?

well then maybe we can flag posts as being mixes or a original tracks.smutek wrote:Disagree. Dj mixes should be allowed as well as links to live pa sets. personally I think hearing other people's original compositions or posting my own tracks for feedback, is much more interesting than hearing someone's 40 minute mix of other people's music. but each to his own. it is cool to hear a good mix of various tracks and learn about other types of music etc.
