Ableton Sync

Post by Gluon » Sat Jun 12, 2010 9:57 am

Hello,

I would love if Ableton had a much more stable Sync option between two instances.

Even if this were proprietary to Ableton (MIDI CLK just doesn't cut it)

It could be a specific Ableton<->Ableton sync over IP or something like that...

Maybe there is something slightly more open that could be done using OSC ?

+1. I find MIDI sync very flaky for some reason...

I think the proper number should be:

select ableton_shop_db;
select count(*) from registered_user_tbl;

:D

they easily could optimize the midisync if they wouldnt follow the false gods..

but..

+1 for an live internal sync protocol additional to and after !! propper dejitereing clockslaving...

actually i really like to see propper slavin allready in L8 and especially for L8 because i cant risk to have it as the master anymore.. it´s rather a conceptional bug that theire algorythm trys to react fast on tempochanges..

i much rather live with a huge lag on tempo changes than with a wobbely sync.
besides..
it can be done with a checkbox in the prefferences that one can choose wobbely but quick on tempochanges or tight but elefant style on tempo changes... whhhooooop... in the end of the day the elefant style sounds rather musical anyway for most materials... ok..with repiitch it can sound a bit funny... but.. isnt this a techno toy?

If Live could just transmit and sync to MIDI Time Code (SMPTE) instead of just MIDI Clock, we'd be in good shape!

Well, you'd only be in good shape if you're playing back a timeline and don't care that the tempos in the two versions of Live match one another if the master changes tempo. For two instances that are working exclusively from session view or where the tempo is being tapped in or something like that, ordinary time code doesn't help.

It seems like a really difficult problem to solve using MIDI clock or linear time code (to me). Live is a lot more dynamic with its tempo than an ordinary DAW...

In defense of Ableton - the answer is that it's very very very hard to implement - even a proprietary version

From my own experiments there is probably too many external variables (outside Ableton) involved

But it would be a whole can of awesome if they came up with something clever for this...

If they did something dramatic like take over the ethernet devices on both machines and run a proprietary protocol that locked the instances together with one as master, something like that, it could work.

Well, you could put one of the two copies in demo mode and use it only for playback (or at least, it's possible they could allow that).
