i actually just saw that Roland came out with the new Octopad. Any thoughts??

Now that i researched more i thinkthe solid unit is a good start and if i feel i need mroe drums i can expand later by adding different units.

Price-wise DM6 is cheaper than Yamaha and Roland the only point I don't like so far is that brain has a cable-snake instead of individual wiring. I will however look at upgrading to the DM6 brain at some point it will also give me the option of extra pads. I've just installed session drums today and they improve the sound quality no end. Another point on the Ion that was mentioned you can buy an I/O trigger for it but that said thats more money you could spend on a better kit. Outside the 'big 3' there is also Traps but basically decide your budget and see what you can get for it.

You can buil your own or you can buy one. It's pads(electronic drum pads) to midi interface. You can also build pads yourself or use commercial pads. The good thing is that you hook up your drums directly to your comp with it via midi. You then just have to assign drum sample for each drum and have fun. Edrum has built in support for hihat pedal(open hat, closed hat, click), snare drum rim shot and velocity(the harder you hit, louther the sound).

If you don't need electronic drums for live performormance but for studio recording, this is ultimate solution, although you can use it to play live with it.

If you and your brother are new to drumming, I'd go for a used kit with good second hand value, like a Roland TD3 or Yamaha DTExpress. Cheap but quality stuff and chances are, if you realize drumming isn't for you, you can probably sell it for about as much as you paid for it. Don't ever buy a used drum kit without trying it first though - people tend to beat them with sticks and stuff, you know...

I built my own set out of old drum shells and used a Alesis Trigger IO to send midi into Ableton. I'm actually going to get rid of them if you want them I will send them to u if you pay for shipping.
I have four drums with mesh heads. I believe I set them all as dual trigger. They work great. I could also sell you my Trigger IO and the Gibraltar Rack W/clamps for reasonable price. ($300)?? I'm in LA.

I'm moving to a smaller studio and since I already own Maschine I don't really use them anymore.
Also the Roland Octapad Sp-30 looks very attractive since you can add a snare,kick, and Hihat to it.

I used the trigger kit to trigger Live Racks and BFD2. At one point I even had it triggering Maschine. All with minimal setup. It just takes a few moments to route everything.

Avoid anything by Alesis, 2Box etc etc etc. All crap quality pads and hardware; the only plus point on the Alesis is the DM-5 Pro module that comes with it.

Roland or Yammaha all the way.

i've got the new 2Box kit, and sound- and playability-wise it craps all over even the flagship Roland and Yamaha kits, which are much much more expensive. Roland, Yamaha and Alesis have got away with crap sounds for far too long now. the developers of the 2Box are from the original ddrum/clavia mob.

the module has 4GB of onboard flash memory, and you can load your own sounds into it.

i was originally thinking about getting a cheap trigger only kit, but i'm really happy i didn't. it's great being able to sit down and play without needing a whole computer system fired up.

I've done a few gigs with my spd-30 octapad now and will have another one the 29th and another one the 1st.
That octapad is really really great. I dig. And you can just go usb out into live, thats what i do. I have set up so i have two kits for clip triggering if i need my loops to be able to change tempo, two for drum rack so i have more sounds that just one and one for impulse. Works really really great. The pads feel great, no dropped notes and no misstriggering. You can connect Kick, snare, crash, hihat and hihatcontroller to it to build a kit out of it to =)

late to the topic i know but has anyone tried the Session Pro DD505? I want a kit at home to improve the skills and also for recording on ableton (bit of a one-man-band). Up to now I've just been using loops and/or click building drum tracks then recording gats and vox over the top but this gets quite boring quickly.

I'm not too worried about perfect sound as the stuff I produce is quite garage-rough-rock but I just can't find any info about this kit on the forums so any user reviews would be appreciated (only in relation to ableton ofc )

im still looking to invest into an octopad so can't say i'm the experienced one answer this question but i do believe that a kit of his kind for drums really is the most artistic way to inspire good music. after all the beat drives they rhythm!

The SPD30/Octapad is indeed good. Makes it easy to add a human element which fits the track. As a previous poster said, the ability to incorporate the on-board sounds with samples (e.g. drumrack, impulse) from Live via the phrase looper expands its possibilities.

It's not exactly cheap, but there doesn't seem to be a lot out there offering the same functionality. Besides, cost is quickly forgotten once you've realised the amount of fun which can be had by hitting things with sticks!
