its because the material that they use to make the stylish looking MBP are quite conductive when it comes to HEAT.
No, I think it's because you don't want to radiate your nards.

The plastic MacBooks get really warm too. I would have bought a MBP with a plastic casing too, because they don't dent.

But whatever. I bought a computer that actually exists. That helps.

i7 MBP here, I don't think it gets hot at all unless pushed way harder than I would for music production (ie, video encoding, unzipping huge files, etc). For normal music use, it runs cooler than my 2006 MBP did and my older HP laptop. Was just sitting on the couch with it working on a tune in Live 8 that used a complex Stylus RMX patch and 6 instance of Omnisphere, barely got warm. If you need more power than that, you need a desktop anyway.

I made some test yesterday. I installed app for measuring temperature.

I started some youtube video, traktor playing some tune and live with some heavy absynth preset - here I set polyphony to 64 voices and play many keys simulatenously - 100% cpu usage. Temperature hit about 85 °C in maximum.

I´m not happy at all with my i7 15".
Left side is very hot and it´s uncomfortable sitting working with it.
The fans speeds up (3000-4500rpm) when I´m using Ableton, eventhough 90-95% of the CPU is idle.

Is this how it should be?
Anyone else using Ableton and i7 that has experinced the same problem?

When I call apple support they say it shouldn´t get that warm, but after reading loads of forums it seems to me that everyone has that problem.(?)

I have the 17" i7 and I don't have any of these problems. In fact, while the case gets a little warm sometimes, usually video related, I never hear the fans come on at all (although they are on, only really quiet).

I should mention however that it shipped with a faulty logic board. I had apple replace it under warranty (took 2 weeks!). Since then no problems.

I completely agree! I am pretty sure I have 3rd degree burns on my left thigh.

It's quite a piss off because you can't get any work done on your lap cuz it begins to burn. I just bought a ThermaPak for it but should I really have to spend more money on top of the $2,500 I already spent on the damn thing?

I've had my i7 MBP since it came out and have never had any stability or heat issues. Yes, it gets hot, but it's perfectly stable and very fast.

I'm using 4 gb of RAM and the 500 gb 7200rpm HD.

I have had mine (17"/8GB RAM/500GB @ 7200rpm) since the week they came out. No overheating and no Ableton Live issues, such as crashes and mysterious disappearances of Live as on my previous MBP.

Does not look as cool but then again It will not be nearly as hot
i think the heat issue is being overstated a bit though...mine isn't any hotter than any of the pc laptops i've owned. it really doesn't seem like an issue on mine.

although i use mine on a desk for audio work i've been sitting on the couch on the net with it on my lap for hours on end and it isn't uncomfortable at all
Three month old thread back from the dead?

It's not the PC/Mac issue. I have an old dell laptop XPS series. It has some of the similar material that some of the MBP have. Not on the entire things but around the keyboard and around the screen.

The damn thing is WAY to hot, partly due to technology and party due to this material that conducts heat very well.

Got a sony viao that is plastic all around core duo 2.8 etc....and the things is ice cold and runs like a top

I'm saying its a material issue not an apple issue.

to me 85 degrees is way to hot to be anywhere near my cock. In fact I don't even put my computer on my lap anymore cause I wanna have kids someday that don't have three arms and four eyes.

I'd buy a MBP in a heart beat if it was all plastic and the USB hubs were powered equally. Cause I'd love access to portable logic studio!?!

Same specs as I have. Do your fans get audible while running a small ableton project.

I must add that it takes some minutes before the left side gets seriously warm, but for the price we have to pay for these machines they should be more pro than it is right now. Or could there be something wrong with some of them since not everyone is experiencing the heat problem?

Mine gets a little warm, but I don't hear any fans unless it's running almost flat out. I think it's important to mention the ambient temperature too when talking about laptops getting hot. Obviously that's going to have a lot to do with things too. I'm in Seattle where it's like 65-70F most of the time in the summer, big difference from say Arizona or Texas.

just got my i7 MBP last week. gets a bit warm but nothing too bad. so far LIve 8 Suite runs like a dream. on my lap it's a -bit- warmer than i'd like, definitely warmer than my thinkpad.

i got the new 17in MBP i7 in April. had it for about 3 months, and no big issues. but.....a couple weeks ago left Live running a looping song with Oxygen and Launchpad connected. returned 2 hours later and everything was off. Apple store sent it off for repair, replaced the main logic board, ram, and a "connector". everything's good now, seems to run cooler. not a fun experience.

Anyone else had a repair with success? A bit afraid to send it to repair and get the same machine with the same problems back again after two weeks. Will be two long weeks..

My fans are never under 2000rpm (running nothing). Same for you guys?
