.ASD File improvement suggestion

Post by yannxou » Fri Feb 27, 2004 9:08 pm

I think the .ASD file could be used to store multiple clips:

More than one clip from the same file could be stored in the ASD (not only the default clip). Then, in the 'Clip View' there could be a combo-box for selecting the specific clip.
This could be interesting, for example, in a long file where you have different loops so it can be easily imported to another live set with all the clips.

Hi,
Well, I just wanted to express the need of 'compacting' those .asd files so when you drag an audio file to another set, all the clips created before and referenced to that audio file could be retreived again easily.

I think that this also would give the user the certainty that when he makes a copy of the audio file + asd file, all the clips that he created are also copied.

I'll try to explain some more:
Now, there's that 'save' button to save the clip's default state in the .asd so when you drag it again, that clip setting is used.
What about if when 'save' is pressed, the clip was saved together with other clips in the same asd? It could be indexed with clip name or order number so when that audio file is dragged again in a live set, you could select (from a combo-box somewhere in the clip's properties) which clip you want to use.

Envelopes would, of course, be saved with each clip, just like right now.
Then, yes, it would be very fun to have some asd with lots of clips with different envelopes so with a simple copy&paste you could use any envelope again anywhere.

But what you mean is very cool also because you could, for example, drag&drop the envelopes directly to the clips. But maybe for that would be better to make another file format just for the envelopes, like .aed.

Well, Abletons, it's up to you!

instead of dragging and dropping the differnent asd files onto the clip, why not just have a drop down menu in the clip view clip box where you can choose the different versions for a clip.

this isnt a completely new idea. adobe has something called version cue for photoshop. you can save different versions of the same file.

so if this is gona happen for Live as well, id want it to be neat and simple.

first, if u wana save a new version, lets just have a "save new version" button in the clip view sample box. or maybe holding alt and clicking on the save button will do the same thing.

so this will add a new entry to the drop down list in the version menu. when you mouse over those entries, all the necessary info will be in the status bar. this includes:
-the exact date and time created, down to the milliseconds
-ok maybe not to the milliseconds
-and some other info should be there that i cant think of right now

so thats my idea. oh and i think the versions should be called sketches, just to be original. or maybe variants, or something like that. i dunno, just make it cool.

keep it up ableton. i hope the competitors dont take this idea.
