Synth Automation not showing up....

Just began playing around with automation. I've got my head around simple stuff like volume, panning etc, but how do you automate something out of a synth? Like for example Cutoff in Sylenth1 or Z3ta ? I try recording while messing around with it and it doesnt come up. Also it is not available as a selection in the automation lane menu.
What am i doing wrong.

I figured it out. it's ok.
I guess bit of manual reading doesn't hurt sometimes after all.
