The short answer is: No Disc needed, as long as you configure the midi setup correctly in Live's Preferences!

To be more specific in setting it up, go to preferences and click the MIDI tab. Select APC40 as your control surface, input, and output. Under Midi ports, turn all turn all track and remote settings on. Good luck

Another note, In your midi settings the takeover mode should be set to "pickup", and you need to be running at least 7.0.18 or 8.x
as the apc will not work with an earlier version.

Live setup: Macbook pro 3ghz 16gb ram, Live 8.x.x, max 4 live, Mpc 1000, Komplete 7, Circle, Akai apc40, Motu ultralite, Krk Vxt8's, and soon a Innerclock Systems sync gen.
