What's been the most valuable resources for information?

Hi,

forgive me if this has been done...

Im just wondering if you guys want to share links to any forum threads, blogs, tuts etc that you read/watched and had a moment of realisation that changed the way you work. Im always learning and get the impression i always will and i would love to hear your most valuable resources that made you think 'im REALLLY glad i just read that'!

As i started this thread i feel i should contribute but at this point i should mention i am terrible at saving or remembering specific locations of informaion i have gained. Although here is one i came across recently that was linked to on an earlier thread on this forum;

Gave me a greater insight into managing headroom across all tracks when working in the box (which i mostly do at present) and is something i will consider on every project i work on from now on!

it all started with tweakheadz.com for me.. i read that bible from begining to end.. it's what got me started when i didn't know crap.. not that i know crap now but i am more knowledgeable than most guitar center reps.. that doesn't say much either..

If you got the fundamentals then Bob Katz's 'Mastering Audio : The Art And The Science (2nd edition)' should be your next level bible. Fascinating and informative reading.

Mastering Audio was definitely a book that I've read multiple times, great and simple explanations for some complex topics.

When I was starting out I think the biggest thing that helped me was Sound On Sound magazine, I'd read all I could get my hands on. They seem to be pretty unbiased and generally had a lot of good hands on advice. Lots of interviews too, I've always enjoyed reading interviews with other artists more than anything.

+1 for Sound On Sound. I got the "esub" online subscription, it's quite reasonably priced and u can look at all the back issues. I really like the "Secrets of the Mix Engineers" but there's all kinds of good stuff in there. They also have a free podcast, those guys have pretty much seen it all and it's just some dry English guys sitting around talking audio. "I think that's probably right, Hugh."

Always hearing great things about the Bob Katz books on mixing & mastering. Gotta get those. I have The Mixing Engineer's Handbook by Bobby Owsinski, it's also very good.

The headroom thing completely changed recording & mixing for me. Took a few classes at the local community college, basics but the professor new his stuff and is a good resource. So if you know anybody around town, local studios etc. it doesn't hurt to ask.

Same here. I must have read that whole thing start to finish at least three times, then printed out sections I couldn't grasp and reread, took notes, etc...

Really an invaluable resource. Nothing I've read since then (7 years ago) has ever really replaced that knowledge, simply augmented or modernized it. Even the art of production and engineering classes I took at the local college were just a refresher on the core concepts I learned from tweakheadz.


Edit: Now that I think about 7 years is a long time, maybe I should go back and see if The Guide has been updated.
