Could anyone comment on using live to create atmospheres?
I usually just use some heavily reverbed samples, I was wondering if there was
any way you could use operator or something to create more dynamic, unique sounds...

Sampler is where I would start, because you can take almost any sample and manipulate the hell out of it. Add some reverb, effects, etc, and you're on the way.
