CDJ's to DJ'ing with Ableton

Hi, i am planning on making the transition from DJ'ing with CDJs to using ableton connected to my macbook. I would firstly like to know if it is possible to use ableton with CDJ's.

Then I would like to hear any ideas about what i need virtually dj'ing with a controller etc. Any good recommendations?

Also is the transition worth it, I gettin a bit bored with using CDJ's, it feels like i cant do enough with them. Are there advantages to using a digital setup?

Very ready to help.... I made the journey myself a couple of years ago and those guys were invaluable... There's so many topics specialised to your challenges that you could spend a week on there without having to ask a question, when you get in a hole though the RTFM count is very low!!

i switched from cdj's to ableton about 5 years ago and wasn't that impressed in the end.
in fact i'm back on the cdj's (2000's) now and wouldn't swap them for anything else, they're head and shoulders better than anything i've used previously (1000's, traktor, serato, ableton etc).
the only downside is that they're just so expensive.

whilst ableton opens up a lot of creative possibilities for playing live, i felt it was a bit boring and soulless for dj-ing.
because there's no beatmatching, i'd just get bored waiting for a track to end or i'd start ruining everything with unnecessary effect noodlings, again because i got bored.

i just missed the fear of messing up a mix or making a mistake and the old spontaneity.
the new cdj's take the best of the new - access to your entire digital library, big screen, quantised looping (which is such good fun) and the best of the old - beat-matching, tactile, hands on control, chance to fuck up etc.

maybe take a look at buying one of the 4 new cdj models that have come out in the last few months?

I'm not sure about using cdjs with Ableton, but I can definitely answer your other questions. First the downside: you will have to painstakingly warp all of your wave, aiff, etc....files to get all songs to start on the first available downbeat. The good thing is, once completed, syncing tracks will be a breeze. I use a Korg Nano Kontrol (with the knobs and faders) to mix. It's definitely worth it in the long-run.
