Recording session midi, always missing the first note

Post by barbarism » Fri Jul 30, 2010 5:18 pm

I can't seem to get a solid work flow down for doing simple midi loop records in the session view. My current process seems cumbersome and completely takes me out of the flow.

I hit record clip, 1 bar count-in kicks off, start playing (I'm usually a split second early on the first note so Live ignores them, ugh) then I continue to play and then hit the space bar to stop recording, which is of course always late. I end up with a 1.1 to 1.25 bar clip which is missing the first set of notes. Next, I open the clip, fix the missing notes manually, then set the loop length to 1 and move the notes to fit within the bar, and then crop clip to eliminate the junk.

The other way that has been far more reliable is to just hit record and record bar after bar, stop, then move the 1 bar loop brace over the best take, then quantize the first column of notes to make sure they at least trigger, then crop clip. Usually I prefer this but, still a hassle.

I've been playing around with punch-in/out records within arrange view, copying those back to the session view with some success. At least when recording in a loop within arrange, it does keep all notes recorded, just outside of the loop scope. I still usually end up with the missing first note issue. Which reminds me, I definitely prefer the way Logic handles the punch-in and loop setup as two points. You can set the loop to be say 3 bars, and the punch-in/out points on the inner/center 1 bar. You can keep that 3 bar loop going and keep making attempts at improving your inner bit.

Is there a way to start recording on first key down or something like that? Or automatically quantize the first notes in the bar so they aren't missed?

Anyone else have a better work flow?

Thanks!
