No sound but tracks show audio signal movement issue

I have the exact same problem except with live In stand alone mode..
it's a serious glitch In lives audio engine or mixer section at the master/ cue output..
I have found if your using an external sound card you can get the audio running again by changing the same rate up and then back down again and there is a slight pause an then the audio comes back again..
but if it happens with the internal card you have to restart live ..
this happened to me 5 times during a 3 hr live set last weekend.

then last night while making a track this happened 10 times in 15 min
just audio tracks and ableton instruments..
I even had the vst and au's disabled
so it's a live issues for sure ..

for me it happens only on my external audio card (MOTU ultralite or MOTU 828).
When it happens and I change driver to the internal card audio still works fine.
I cannot manage to get the audio playing back again from the MOTU though.
Must every time restart the computer.
This is seriously pesky.
At the beginning it happened 2 or 3 times, for a while (with 8.1.4) did not happen.
then happened this morning several times, so many I lost count.

I also agree it may be Live, cause it happened with 1 audio track and 1 MIDI track, but I have to say that since this upgrade, true CPU seems less heavy, but the computer is warmer, and fans are almost always on.

But no crash anymore, I sent some crash reports to the support guys at the times of 8.1.3 when it was happening.
Now Live simply will not crash, simply not transmit audio to the MOTU cards anymore till I restart the whole thing.

hey guys i have the same issue, but worse

with the addition of silence from the master channel i have 315% CPU usuage woot!
after that ableton crashes.

ive noticed once i reinstalled 8.1.4 i can open the track fine again but when i save and reopen

315% CPU and silence again haha, i would guess through logic that the silence is due to the 315% CPU usuage

any ideas?

I'm having the same issue with Live 8.1.3. Everything was working fine, then I pressed the "sync midi controls" button on my midi controller to ensure that all live controls were synch'd to the actual position of the knobs/sliders on my controller...and whammo. Both of my drum tracks show that audio is playing through the channel (by examining the instruments and effects) but no audio is leaving the channel nor is it being played through the master.

I use the cue mix app that runs for the ultralite to change the sample rate from 44.1 to 48 and then back to 44.1 and the sound kicks back in.


any updates from ableton about this bug ?

I wont be doing a live set again with a version above 8.1.1 again after the last time

I (painstakingly) worked around the issue by creating a new audio/midi track, copying the clips, instruments and effects to the new track and updating the routing to be the same as the original track. The audio on the new track(s) worked just fine. Since the clips, settings, effects and instruments are all exactly the same on the new track AND audio is audible and since the original track is inaudible then there's definitely a bug.

It has happened to me as well- 2.16gig imac running macOS 10.4.11, Tascam US428 interface. The problem initially surfaced while using Live 8.1.1, and was described by the previous posts exactly. It had stopped for quite a while but has again returned, seemingly since the install of Live 8.1.4, fairly frequently. I will be editing audio clips in the arrangement view sometimes loop length, some times volume level automaton in the clip it-self, sometimes in the repositioning of the clips. I have also had a clip I am editing (moving) lose it's audio output, when there is no automation on any track or clip in that region. Puzzling, to say the least. Hopefully the Ableton crew is looking into this further, it is an extremely frustrating bug.

I generally have minimal going on...2 EIC2 string tracks, 1 Session Drum track and one Latin Percussion track, playing both strings layered along with drums. I wouldnt' think this is alot to cause a audio drop out?

Same here. My issue seems to be set related. It only happens in 1 particular Live Set. All others work fine.
Does it in 8.1.3/4/5b2 and doesn't matter what soundcard i use or how many times I restart Live or reboot the computer. Problem is still there.

This is getting a little annoying, I cannot manage to work for more than 30 minutes without having this problem again and again.

I would love to go back to 7, but I have so incorporated max 4 Live patches that I am stuck with 8.

Now, to get to a point, I can definitely say these facts:
Audio drop outs when:
1a) moving a clip in arrangement view.
1b) editing some automation in arrangement view
1c) selecting a part of the time line for looping and then moving the mouse (always in arrangement view)
it can happen also when playback is stopped

What I experience is a glitch in the GUI response (mouse not responding for a sec), and then audio drop outs , no crashes.

2a) Recording in an audio track from ext input with a MIDI track in solo (if not in solo it does not happen)
2b) Recording an audio track, and recording automation at the same time if starting record while in playback.

These drop outs happen also without max 4 Live devices, with a sampling rate of 44.1 KHz, a quite lite project, different audio buffer sizes ( from 256 to 2048 same story, and 2048 with 8 tracks open and a couple of fxs and NO VSTs should actually be smooth as silk ).

Changing the sampling rate from Live´s preferences pane will in most cases solve the problem, but not always. And honestly in a live performance this simply will not do (of course having a backup CD player or something helps...).
Switching to internal audio card will output audio, but if one switches back to the external audio card (in my case MOTU ultralite and 828 MKII) there is still no audio.

Changing sampling rate from the MOTU consolle will solve the problem.

Up to now the problem existed ONLY and solely with Firewire MOTU devices, fully upgraded firmware/drivers.
I experience these problems ONLY with Live.
Other audio/video softwares work a charm.

Sorry but I am in the middle of a working crisis here!

this problem is not unique to motu products after speaking to my friends we have audio dropouts with m-audio rme, focusrite and many more so it's not unique to one company or one set of drivers ..
it is quite obvious at this stage that it's an ableton live problem on Mac os it's occurring on versions from 10.4 to 10.6
it doesn't matter if you have an new or old MacBook or iMac.
In my opinion this the most serious bug ableton has at the moment and as time progresses on more and more people are getting it.
I really hope at this stage that it's at the top of the list of things to do..
I actually worried to see what else goes wrong with ableton in 8.1.6 when they release the bridge...
(work on this should have been completely halted until live is stable once again)

Are you saying someone that works there is saying that this isn't happening, that would be just silly at this stage?

Well regardless of who is saying what we need to solve this issue, we can't go to a gig crossing our fingers every time we open the app..
I mean it's frustrating enough when it happens at home but at a gig it can mean death to you reputation as a producer/ performer.

the thing i find really strange is just about everyones story is the same, most started around 8.1.3 some not till 8.1.4
but it wasn't an immediate problem for 99%

Anyway I was not referring to any one at Ableton, but some musician friends who work almost exactly with the same configurations, except for the HW (FW 800), and to them it does not happen.
What I also experienced was the total audio f++k up even after I quitted Live, for several times Quicktime just hang up, Firefox, iTunes too, everything.
Had to restart Audio card/computer to get it back working.
And I mean, Quicktime hang ups...????????

This still happens to me if I connect an External Monitor, so I start to think it is a Macbook + Graphic Card, Graphic routines problem...
