Well, after wiping my hard drive completely clean and reinstalling the OS and only the most necessary software (a full day of work..ugh), my system was definitely running smoother...but not smooth enough. The problems returned for me too, after only about 15 minutes in Live (or Logic) soundcard went bezerk. I suspected hardware at this point, and started with hardware diagnostics, checking for faulty RAM etc. But then I took the plunge inside and took the whole thing apart, starting to suspect overheating possibly causing my usb ports to fail or something, because I had also seen my external drives suddenly ejected when exporting video from Final Cut, and I knew already my temps were high.

Four year old computer, no warranty, probably dirty as hell. I followed the guide on ifixit.com, and bought the T6 screwdriver, and unsurprisingly found a birds nest in the heatsinks. Now...voila, been running about 10-15 deg C less and no more cpu jumps and USB drives ejecting! Well, after one day of use... lets see. But a world of difference so far.

Anyway, just a recommendation, if your mbp has some years on it, clean it out (but be careful, its requires Karate Kid precision - may be worth going to a technician to do it, but Im too poor and have some experience with this stuff already).

Before you go buying a new computer, clear and clean the one you have! If it was a good machine once, it still can be :)
