Two modes of operation: 'DJ' and 'Studio'

This is probably a stupid idea but here goes ...

Lots of users use Live for DJ ing in a real Live situation, others use Live for improvising in a 'studio'. The needs of these two groups are different in certain areas, so here's the idea:

Live would work in two modes ie 'Live mode' and 'Studio mode'. Each mode would have the features and optimizations for that particular mode of operation. For example, a live DJ would not necessarily want midi features, but in studio mode these would be necessary. There would be other advantages that you can probably figure out your self !

Excellent idea! This is exactly the sort of thing I thought as soon as I came to grips with Live.

I disagree actually, the program shouldn't be limited at all just because people want to use it for DJing. Kind of defeats the reason so many of us like it for DJing.

Kinda irks me that that so many people think that just because you're DJing with the app, you need less features than a 'real' studio musician would too. I use the same features in live when I'm DJing, writing tunes, or performing my own complex Live PA's. If you don't need a feature, just don't use it

Maybe a solution would be to have the ability to customise your layout according to your needs. You can somewhat do this by eliminating certain views, but it could be taken a step further to, as you say, optimize Live for a specific task. Preferences.....can't live without it.

yes, exactly .. takes care of those people that want Live to remain a pure live app, and those of use who use it as a complete DAW solution.

ive been thinking this for a while.

Thanks for the feedback, I actually think the needs of a Live DJ are more pressing than studio use. I have great admiration for anyone using a computer to do a live gigs.

It's the people who improvise on stage, creating music as they go (electronic jamming) that wouldn't want to be pigeonholed into one of two modes - they truly stradle the gap between what you would call "DJ" and "studio".

However, I understand the desire to shut off features you don't want. What I would suggest is that you pick up a used copy of Live 2 on ebay - It's exactly what you requested, and you could probably buy a legit lisence for less than $20 bucks.

Being a live DJ and a studio user are not mutually exclusive. A DJ might want to record his work and then take it back to the 'studio' for editing, mastering etc. The idea of two modes is to make it better, not to inhibit any ones style.
