best freeware softsynth ever = synth1 (pc only)
anything by TAL
stormgate
wong's w1 limiter
dblue glitch (pc only)
zebralette

err there's a few more i'm forgetting right now....lately I use stormgate a whole lot, it's great for quick intuitive gate fx.

I'm still crying because I've gone Mac-only (iMac and MacBookPro) so I can't use Synth1 anymore. sob.

My No.1 free plugin is the excellent Synth1 Nord lead emulation. v1.07 is ultra stable - I can't vouch for the more recent updates yet, as I'm still to really use them in anger.

Voxengo Span was a rather pleasant surprise, one of the better frequency analyzers I've come across and very low on cpu usage. I like it more than Live's native spectrum too. 4.5/5

I use it on OSX.

Mexoscope is also pretty good. 3.5/5.

Green Oak Crystal is my favourite freeware synth.
Bootsy/Variety Of Sound - Density mkII, Ferric
DaSample - Glaceverb
Flux - StereoTools and Bitter
Sonalksis - Free G
Digitalfishphones - spitfish, blockfish, dominion, endorphin, etc. (by Samplitude plugin writer Sascha Eversmeier who unfortunately no longer supports these, but they are still damned good).
Voxengo - SPAN, R8Brain Free (excellent sample rate converter pc only at the moment), Boogex, Old Skool Delay, Stereo Touch, etc.
Jeroen BreebartPC-2 compressor, barricade, ferox
Kjaerhus Classic plugins - delay, chorus, compressor, limiter, filter, EQ
audio damage - roughrider free
Minimogue VA http://www.home.no/gunnare/

and lots more which I have forgotten.

i think my fave freebie is Sam's VOPM but its more about really cheap sounding FM stuff. very evocative of soundblaster cards, sega genesis, and late 80's arcade games.
