East West Symphonic Orchestra, Live 8, 32-bit/64-bit issues

So, I finally have Live 8 working with Windows 7.

Then I bought East West Symphonic Orchestra. The 32-bit version won't install on Windows 7. Live 8 won't recognise the 64-bit version plugin. I'm stupid because I didn't check the compatibility chart on the East West website.

Any suggestions ? I'm currently thinking the best option would be to create a partition with a 32 bit version of XP on, and use Live on that until **ABLETON FINALLY GET ROUND TO RELEASING A 64-BIT VERSION** (HINT HINT). I've never created a partition before, does this seem like a feasible solution ?

I'd guess you are trying to install the latest version 2.0.21 of Play? I tried updating my Play today to this version on 64-bit Vista, and surprisingly the 32-bit update package did not want to install because of 64-bit OS. This is a bit odd, as the previous updates installed fine. I suppose many users these days have more than 4GB of RAM, so they run 64-bit OS but their DAW is 32-bit application, like Live currently is.

So my advice would be to try an older installer like version 2.0.8, which should allow you to install 32-bit edition of Play. EastWest seem to host the older files on their downloads, even if the links are only for the latest one. Copy the download link of the installer and change the filename from "Play_Update_2.0.21_32_bit.zip" -> "Play_Update_2.0.8_32_bit.zip" to get the previous update installer.

Yeah, I tried installing the latest version. That's an excellent idea, very clever, but it doesn't seem to work for me. The older 32-bit version of Play had one error when I installed it, but it did seem to complete. But then when I tried to install the 32-bit version of East West, I got error messages and haven't been able to open the actual program. Have you had any problems at all ? I may just be missing something really obvious.

I've spent all night figuring out how to partition my hard drive, so am gonna carry on down this route as well, though I guess it means waiting for another authorisation code for Live...oh joy...

Well, the older 32-bit updates actually complain about some incompatible file that cannot be installed on a 64-bit system, but it will proceed with the installation and in my experience it has worked as VST (never really used the standalone version) on Live 7. I think the installer package also have pretty recent version of the iLok drivers, but I guess you could try manually getting the latest one from http://www.paceap.com/. What is the error you're getting when trying to run it?

Edit: found this information from the EastWest Play support forum:
"The 64 bit update will install a 32 bit .dll for you.
The default location for the 32 bit .dll is: C:\ProgramFiles(x86)\CommonFiles\EastWest\play_vst.dll"

So the 32-bit version of the VST is installed on the filesystem, just not on your VST folder. I shall try installing and copying the .dll myself now..

The error message when installing that older update is "The 32-bit version DIFxAPI does not work on Win64 systems. A 64-bit
version of DIFxAPI is required. occurred in ./copyinf.cpp at line number:397
Other error:-5326870347 Internal Operation:200"

But...it now appears to be working! Live 8 recognised the dll you mentioned, in C:\ProgramFiles(x86)\CommonFiles\EastWest\play_vst.dll
Though it didn't at first, not sure why it changed its mind...

That's great news! You are more lucky than myself with this, as I have never been able to get Play to work in Live 8.
It works fine on Live 7.0.16 (since the first versions of Play) but I have tried every Play update ever since, and each of them have crashed my Live 8 while scanning plugins.

Which version of Live 8 have you tried it with ? I've got it going with 8.1.4. I'm wary of saying that it's 100% stable since I've only used it for an hour or so, but so far it's been fine. Otherwise, it implies it's an issue with Vista. Have you sent Ableton the crash reports ?
