its because they have changed the file system in version 8.1.3. when you download the update there is a short warning on the page telling you that you can no longer open any project made with an earlier version after 8.1.3 . I noticed it while i was downloading . I am waiting for a reply from the team on how to export stuff into a format to transfer it to the newer version as ive been working on a film project for 7 months and have been off line so not updated... i think i would have ended up like yourself if id not read the info on the download. Contact the teck team they could prob help you out... theres prob alot of people who missed the warning. hope you sort it mate!!!! :D

hello again had an e-mail last night from the tech team ...

Hello Colin, thank you for contacting Ableton! You can of course open old projects in the latest version of Ableton Live. The changes in the file system just mean that you won't be able to open a project in Live 8.0.9 for example that has been saved with Live 8.1.5. Sorry for the misleading information on our web-site!

I installed 8.1.5 last night and all my projects work fine
so you should be able to open yours if not.... give them a shout they are pretty on the ball... good luck!!!!
