Maximizer similar to OGG Psychoacoustics?

Post by vitamin-e » Tue Aug 17, 2010 6:46 pm

I was thinking today: OGG and similar codecs work by omitting frequencies that cannot be heard due to masking and such, presumably resulting in added headroom...

With this logic, do you guys think it would be feasible to make a maximizer that, as you turn the volume up, rather than limiting the amplitude, it would selectively remove frequencies that are below the threshold of hearing, resulting in more headroom for the "important" waves, and a higher overall volume(can you say loudness war? lol.)
Maybe the amplitude of the waves being removed would be so low that the headroom would be neglegible anyway...but I'm thinking, as you remove more and more, the appearant volume will go up and up, making it more pleasing to the ear.

I dunno...what do you think?
