BTW. If you go with Reason, I recommend that you have 1GB RAM, since the NN-XT kits with all of the drums with all the mics uses up some RAM.

there are also some other good discussions about drum samplers on the forum... at a quick glance, RMIV seems to be a favorite there, too.

Reason is tempting, for sure, but out of my price range.

OK, thanks for the responses. After much consideration and with battery and RMIV next-in-neck for quite a while, I just ordered Battery 2, and went all out with the studio drums disc, too (this is after much discussion with my wonderful wife). I have no need for drum synthesis, and wanted something a little more adaptable. To be honest, the choice was tough, expecially after seeing the excellent customer service on Linplug's forum over at KVR.

I think I could have been happy with either, but it's nice to know I'm set for drum sounds now. Thankfully both companies have good demos so I could give them a proper test in live.

Hopefully before too long I'll have some decent songs together....

velocity layers can be limited too. because on certain velocity levels always the same sample will be playing. a drummer will play at a constant level too but the sound will be different because all the time because of stick/tip position hitting the drums and part of drum which is being hit.

Simpler is great for drumsamples. if you want to load realistic and dynamic samples, just use several keys for one drumsound. edit all those keys a little different and by playing the keys dynamically you can really make an interesing sound. it's easier to handle than velocity layers in my opinion for drumsounds.

EEkevin, if you want accustic sound for your drums, why don't you use some drumloops by a real drummer?

Because I'm creatively weird. I like the sound of acoustic drums, but feel the need to program the beats myself (which is why RMIV's "grooves" didn't weigh much on my decision). I really just want the best hits possible. From what I've read, all the loop libraries you mention are very good though. If I get proficient enough at playing, I'd like to take my laptop down to my church and "borrow" their roland v-drums for a couple hours to record some midi. But, chances are, I'll be hunched over the midi editor for months!

I bought Groove Construction Kits from Beta Monkey - very useful acoustic drum sounds for $25 - I was pretty surprised for that low price!

My suggestion is to purchase:

A) Native Instruments Synthetic/Studio Drum Expansion Packs. All the kits use WAV files for their individual hits and can be dragged to Impulse. A+

B) Vengeance Essential Club Sounds. You get tons if single hits for kits, among other things, in WAV format. $89 and well worth it!
