Problem getting my Tascam FW-1884 working with Live 7

I'm going crazy! I'll admit that I'm not super savvy on Ableton or the DAW, but I did have it working fine on my Vista laptop. Now when I try it on my Dell Latitude D830 running Windows 7 it acts weird. Most notably, the faders don't respond to my changes when setup on the Mackie emulation. When Live starts it moves them once, and when I exit it moves them again. Otherwise, they just sit there driving me insane. Also, I can't get the tone from the setting menu for latency testing. It did work miraculously once, but then never again. I felt like I won the lottery and then lost the ticket. Please give me your suggestions, don't be afraid to suggest something obvious, I won't be offended and I believe there is a good chance of operator error here. Thanks.

Do you have Live set up to use that device as a control surface? I imagine you do if it's moving faders on startup, but it's not clear if that's from signals from Live or if that's just what happens when something engages that device.

Check Preferences->MIDI and see if you've put it in the control surface list. If you're using Mackie emulation, you'll need to choose a Mackie Control device on whatever in and out ports.

Good news. I got some helpful advice from a guy on the Tascam forum that you will probably be interested in as well. He wrote:

I don't know if this is your issue but since you just upgraded to Windows 7 you may be running into a firewire card glitch that I ran into when I attempted to get my FW-1884 to play nice with Windows 7.
Apparently there is an issue where Windows 7 and the FW-1884 won't work well together unless the Firewire Card is using a legacy driver. If you go in under the device manager in windows and look for your firewire card, it probably will have the latest driver installed and if you tell it to look for another driver it will tell you the latest driver is installed. Go in to where you can update the driver in the device manager and tell it to let you browse for a driver and if I remember correctly there will be a choice for Windows to show you all of the drivers available. Make that choice and one of the possible selections will be a legacy driver. Load that driver and see if that fixes your problem. Some of us up in the Firewire subforum have been debating if this is still necessary. It apparently was definatley a problem during hte beta testing of Windows 7 but some assumed that the issue had been fixed once the actual Windows 7 drivers came out. I don't think it has been fixed and I'm betting this will fix your problem. If it doesn't, you can alwasy go back to the newest driver.
