Can't make keyboard assignments work.. help!

for some reason my ableton won't respond to keys I've assigned. I know I'm doing it right cos I've just set it up on a friends PC and it works...
Ableton allows me assign the keys and everything, it just doesn't do anything when i hit them.

Is there a general preference anywhere for toggling keys on/off like in Reason?? All help will be much appreciated!

(btw I'm using a Vaio laptop and v4.01)

what are you assigning keys to.querty or midi controller.make sure the device you want to use has a green light next to it in the preference settings.
