Correct Auto Warp - Why Can't Live Do It?
Correct Auto Warp - Why Can't Live Do It?
I've been using Live since version 2, and the warping feature still does not work well. The warp markers are usually in the right vicinity, but never in the exact spot (i.e. at zero crossing on the start of the 1, 2 - kick, snare, etc.).
Why can't Ableton do this correctly? Logic does it perfectly, and ReCycle has done it for the past ten years. I'm no programmer, but I don't understand why this is still an issue. After all, this is supposed to be a DJ/remix DAW. I'm glad I don't DJ with Live - it would be a pain to correct all those transient markers on every song.
Don't get me wrong - I LOVE Ableton, but I don't get this. Thanks in advance for the help.

you're probably mixing up 'warp' with 'rex'-style "chopping"..
live has that as well..
right-click an audio clip and choose 'slice to new midi track'

1) on occasion, I've had things auto-warp correctlydigivitis wrote:I've been using Live since version 2, and the warping feature still does not work well. 2) To my knowledge, Live is not "supposed to be a DJ/remix DAW"

hate to break it to you Dingle but Logic and Live's Complex Pro modes are the same algorithm developed by a third party.digivitis wrote:I've been using Live since version 2, and the warping feature still does not work well. Are you trying to warp tracks that aren't House music? Then yeah, you're pretty much screwed.

Live can do what you're asking very well.....
You just need to "tell" it what to do to suit your needs.
It doesn't have a mind reading algorithm yet, but Live 9's on its way.......

I understand that REX chopping and warping are different concepts, but they are both based on the concept of transient detection.
Even with "8-bar friendly" tracks that are locked to a MIDI-based tempo, Live still has difficulty finding the transient and the correct count.
To those who warp complete songs, do you always find the correct 1.1.1, then check every warp marker (say every 8 bars) to make sure everything's locked on time?

find a 1.1.1 that makes sense.digivitis wrote:To those who warp complete songs, do you always find the correct 1.1.1, then check every warp marker (say every 8 bars) to make sure everything's locked on time?
sometimes it's before or after the song starts due to a weird intro, the START flag doesn't have to be on the 1.1.1.
if it's obviously a computer drummer I set the 1.1.1, check 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and at the end of the song.
if it's not then I make a 4 bar moving window that I warp along, sometimes making it 2 or 1 bar long.
if things get really weird I count it out to make sure it's in 4/4, or at least if it's 3/4 I change the time sig to 3/4.
also listen for weird breaks, sometimes people will with short breaks in songs that are only a half measure long.
it just takes practice. warp 100 songs in different genres, you'll learn a ton.
I warp to a steady drum beat, not the metronome.
I think warp does a good job but maybe I have too low of expectations when it comes to a computer analyzing the flow of music. it doesn't do all that work, I don't expect it to.

Re: Correct Auto Warp - Why Can't Live Do It?
Compared to traktor sure, it does not auto the whole song. You do have to set the 1, and warp at some points along the way, usually catch the kick after a break, and check the last bar a kick is in you usually are good. I think 1 song out of a thousand you have to go bar by bar.
Back to the the traktor issue, All the serato guys call Live cheating, I have to sit and explain to them, You have to warp the track in Live, no its not on auto, the way traktor works. I prefer Live, it my all in one solution. my 2 cents.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah, that's how I've been doing it for years now. I just wanted to make sure that there weren't any better methods or shortcuts.
