Post by smog g » Tue Mar 21, 2006 1:45 am

BiFilter and Kjaerhus Classic Filter are two alternatives that are free.

(although BiFilter isn't really a auto filter, ie no LFO and envelope follower)

IF you don't need it to be "auto", check out Frohmage from Ohm-boyz. It has all kinds of weird flavor, as well as being a very nice regular filter.

More freebies: Devine Machine Minion & Venusian Snail Technology Mutine 1 are both good. Betabugs also do a range of filters....

I am also looking for an alternative, but a more specific one. I am looking for a plug in that allows me to have a high pass filter and a low pass filter at the same time, so basically it can replace two instances of auto filter in ableton.

Filterfreak 2 (SoundToys) and Volcano (Fabfilter) both let you do that. Their filters sound quite different from one another, you might want to demo them if you are considering them.

'course, a nice alternative that's economical and easy is to build an audio effect rack with two autofilters in series, and some macro controls that link them. That will still be way lighter in terms of CPU than most 3d party filters.

In my case, I need them to be VSTs because I want to use them in Torq. I am running Torq through Ableton at the moment but some compatibility issues have forced me to ditch Live, so I need some VSTs to run inside Torq that can replace the auto filters I was using in Ableton.

Camelphat.. has a LP/HP filter with Rez - you can disable all the other efx to just use the filter too.
Camelphat free.. or Camelcrusher is only a LP (but free)

I picked up Volcano2 based on the recommendations in this thread, and completely support all the above recommendations of this plugin.
