Volume and effects levels

Post by KONSTRUKT » Mon Sep 06, 2010 6:00 am

Hello. I just wanted to ask if anyone had any tips on volume... When I'm using sends it's really hard to get the delays and other effects just right... I know you should run the effects wet when using the sends but the volume always clips the master and if i lower the volume it's too low... Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated...

If it clips the master fader itself, i.e., the whole song's peak level is too high, the only choices are to lower all the track levels so that the master is safely below 0dBFS (the preferred way) or lower the master fader volume (not considered a good practice, but works in a pinch). If you mean though that some intermediate level is going over 0dBFS, for example, the level coming out of an effect, but the master level is fine, safely below 0dBFS, this can be fixed by proper gainstaging, i.e., lower the level going into the effect and maybe compensate somewhere downstream.
