Splitting Frequencies

Hi,

I've tried just about everything I can think of for splitting frequencies in Live with no luck. It's not that I can't do it, it's the fact that everything colors the sounds to a noticeable extent.

I tried using EQ8 by making the highpass/lowpass frequencies overlap but the signal got quieter, I suspect because the crossover frequencies were cut.

Then I tried EQ3 which obviously isn't transparent.

Finally I tried multiband dynamics, but that altered the sound too. I set amount to 0%, am I forgetting something?

Does anyone have a way of splitting the sound as transparently as possible?

make you a rack

if you make ie a LP low Q then subtract this to original signal (mixing original + LP phase reverted using utility) you get
a two band split more clean than a HP + LP with no gain loss. then need to resplit extra band if want more bands.
but you won't get a much better result than using multiband compression set to 0 however (when you drop it) with live
build in filters/eq.

consider that no filters are transparent exept high end linear phase like waves or Tc electronic, wich anyway induces high latency.
i find a good compromise is sonalksis filters, quite transparent but that"s all a matter of taste.

Thanks for the tip. That sounds like a pretty neat idea, I'll make sure to try it out. By low Q do you mean under 0.7, or just low enough so that there's no noticeable resonance?

i use to set it to 1 (or below)

edit: sorry more 0.7 as you thougt, you see why exactly.

There are a few dedicated Linear Phase EQ's around that can give you a more colorless operation. Have no doubt that they are free ones, just have to google it.

Beware of phase cancellation on frequencies overlapping when you rack up various bands.
