which elements of the mix need/should be sidechained

hi guys!
i would be greatful for a tip.i was wondering which elements of the track should be sidechained to kick?
bass,synths?all of them?
also,as i am working with virus TI,should i record the audio in ableton and than sidechain it to the kick?

Usually its bass, pads and synth lead-plucls for me.
Assuming that we speak for 4/4 music.

none if you can help it. use eq to avoid masking.
unless you're going for that dreaded pumping sound... but then each to his own :)

sidechain everything including the kick! and then sidechain the master as well!

but.

sidechain anything you feel should be sidechained. if you're not sure then try it out and see.

sometimes on the whole mix or a few busses with different settings but always very subtle just to add natural sounding punch and groove without audible pumping... think about it, -6db is already half perceived loudness. sometimes the meters wont show any gain reduction

with that said i prefer to sidechain outside of the computer for the tightest sound, the FMR RNC compressor is great for that

nothing ever has to be sidechained. try it and use those things on the side of your head.
