DON'T READ THIS SHIT UNLESS YOU WANNA WIN A LIGHTSABER

Post by dton » Thu Sep 16, 2010 5:34 pm

Hey,
as the title clearly states, I'm in need of a vocalist. Sometime in August, I started working on this track that is more Grizzly Bear/A Place to Bury Strangers inspired than the more electronic stuff I did before, but it doesn't quite work without vocals. I wanted to send it to Ableton Summer Music Challenge for youngsters (don't tell this to anybody, but I'm fifteen)... Not exactly to win anything, I just wanted to get my stuff to Apparat somehow, which, as I already realized, isn't possible anymore, since the competition ends in a few days, but still, I think this is one of the best things I've done so far and I'd love to finish it. I've got a pretty clear idea of how I want the vocals to sound, but I'd also welcome some of your input. You can write the lyrics, or I can write them for you - to be frank, I don't care at all about them, as long as they're not completely dull. I'd like to use your voice more like an instrument than... you know, actual voice. (think of Kid A by Radiohead and vocal layering done by Grizzly Bear)
And just to clarify one more thing, please, if you don't intend to sing on this track, I don't really care about what do you think about it. Unless you like it, of course - I never get bored of reading that.

^ This, obviously, isn't finished, as there are more guitars (and some glitch work) coming when I finally find a singer.

sorry, but if you are able to produce something as awesome as that, then you should have the balls to sing over it on your own as well.

filefactory sucks a lot though.

Are you sure that you are 15 years old?

Yeah, the last time I checked, I was still fifteen, which is also one of the reasons why I won't sing on the track. Even though my voice has already finished changing, I still think it's pretty high and definitely not something I have in mind for the track. The other reasons are that I don't have a microphone (not that big a deal) and I'm just not able to stay in key (a pretty big deal).
If FileFactory bothers people so much they just won't listen to it, here's another link: http://leteckaposta.cz/264959000 (I assume most of you don't speak Czech, so just click on dsfdsfdsf.mp3).
Thanks for calling it awesome, though.

Try posting it on Soundcloud.com

Those other two sites are terrible.

You live in Brno. Why don't you look up a singer at the Janá?ek Academy?

This should work. The link up there doesn't seem to work for logged-out users for some reason.

Good question. I've been looking for someone in Brno to make music with for the past two years (even though never specifically at the Academy) and I was mostly unsuccessful. Musically, Brno is in a pretty dark place right now, which is weird, because even smaller Czech cities have a pretty big alternative music scene (and then there is, of course, Prague). And even if I'd find somebody willing to sing on this track without really liking it (which is something I'd prefer to avoid), I have a strong doubt that the person would be willing to work with a toddler of my age. I've come to learn that anonymity on the Internet is bliss.

Not bad, you should get a chick to sing on it. No joke, would go well with some haunting female vox.
Get your local anorexic goth chick to moan some shit over it and it's all good. Seriously, find some chick at a rave, any goth chick at a rave would have a wider musically palette than the average one.
Your age isn't an issue, finding a young vocalist who isn't just talking shit and actually can be creative is. Thing is if you do find someone, then your age is a selling point! not a crutch! Justin Brodrick (Godflesh, Techno Animal, Jesu, Final etc.) was 16 when he started drumming for legendary Grind core band Napalm Death!

Kids are far more into new music than adults and the older you get the less likely kids are to pay attention unless you're established etc.
Also, fuck you! I want my lightsaber!

Why thank you. While I didn't really want female vox in this, I'd probably settle with a chick right now... If I could just find one.
I'm well aware of Justin Broadrick and I consider myself being a fan of his, which is also the reason why I'll think I'm a failure the moment I'll turn sixteen.

I knew this would bring up hard feelings among some. Oh well, Star Wars nerds aren't to be fucked with...

Not much of a Star Wars nerd, but who in their right mind wouldn't want a lightsaber?

Justin Brodrick isn't the norm though, not even close. Personally I fucked most of my 20's and 30's away, and definitely think I'm writing better now than ever before.
Thing is, it's a harder road to travel at my age than yours. Your big chore is figuring out how to get people to pay attention, but at least here in the states 19-21 is the magic age where people will think you're relevant. So you're not too far away. My only saving grace is my singer being in her early 20's, it's the whole Garbage scenario with the seasoned older dudes and a young pretty chick up front.

I get ya completely on the not wanting to work with chicks though, I didn't until my 30's, before that I hated female vocals in general. Don't know why that's common? but it is? I would seriously think about it though, people are retarded, and respond like trained monkeys when you have a pretty chick in front, this includes booking agents and record companies. Men want to stare at your singer and hire you, and women want to be liked by your singer and hire you. Problem is finding one that doesn't suck shit or bring too much drama.
