Is there a way to write automation into an audiotrack clip but pass audio from the timeline?
Why, you ask?
Current setup: Midi track with FunkyNoiseGenerator --->Percussionerizer. Percussionerizer needs automation to work correctly which I've organized into clips.
Problem: FunkyNoiseGenerator is a Crashy von CPU Hog.
So I'd like to record 5 minutes of FunkyNoiseGenerator to the timeline. Then, I could pass it to Percussionerizer. Unfortunately to do this, I would need an audio track which seems to force me to put audio into my clip therefor muting the timeline audio.
Am I as stuck as I think I am?

Record the percussion clips onto Track A.
Record a little bit of silence and drop the silent clip onto Track B. (This is known as a "dummy clip.")
Set the routing of Track A to go to Track B.
Set Track B's monitor type to In.
Any automation in the dummy clip now affects the audio from Track A.
