How to record automation in to the clips?
Re: How to record automation in to the clips?
Ok, understand. Though it is so strange. Really such a big difference between arrangement and session? Arrangement do that with no problems.

It's all about the coding.. Henke made it seem like it was a huge rewrite, but maybe Live 9 needs that?

Re: How to record automation in to the clips?
what I find most frustrating about it is that they have crippled the session view for the sake of the arranger. There are things I like about the arranger in Live but seriously I would much rather have the session view be as powerful as it possibly could be even if it meant I didn't arrange AT ALL in Live and used one of the 50 billion other DAWs on the planet for that.akm wrote:Ok, understand. Making use of the scenes in session view I can go a long way to creating an arrangement that can also be performed with. Because you HAVE to use the arranger to record absolute automation then you are forced to start using it well before I'd like to.
I'd think I'd even prefer to just have a session only version of Live that just had some kind of "pattern arrangement" lane that could be showed or hidden (like the overview) that was just used for sequencing the order of scenes so that I basically do everything in session view (including automation) and just hit record, play the scenes in the order I want them.
see this thread: http://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php? ... 1&p=998177
Sequencers like Logic etc have a lot of years ahead of Live, so Ableton can never hope to fully catch up with them without sacrificing other things where they have the advantage.
We can't find session view anywhere else, but we can find millions of other versions of the arranger.
Don't get me wrong, I don't hate Live's arranger, I actually prefer a lot of things about it, I just could live without it if it meant session view was better.

Re: How to record automation in to the clips?
i cannot stand other programs way of dealing with the arrangement mode
live just keeps it 10000x more simple with only regular mouse and draw mode with full use of ctrl/alt/shift
no waste of time switching between the slicer tool and select tool and mover tool and the tool changer tool with the optional tool add-on. it gets to be too much when you just want to move stuff around and duplicate/micro edit with ease
add an option for absolute/relative, set the default on absolute and call it a day. pulling back features is never a good idea. pulling back features is never idea. what? pulling back features is never a good idea.

I actually agree mostly - I still mainly use Live for good reasonhurlingdervish wrote:i cannot stand other programs way of dealing with the arrangement mode

I'm just saying I'd prefer to stay in session as long as possible

... I hope not. Because when you rewrite software you bust it. Look what happened to Live 8.. I think major changes were needed byoutershpongolia wrote:It's all about the coding.. Henke made it seem like it was a huge rewrite, but maybe Live 9 needs that?
allowing M4L into it...

Don't forget that Native Instruments has done it with Maschine. It has a session view that's a bit different but still the same idea. Pattern based sequencer with Scenes, Patterns (clips), and Groups (tracks). Oh, and you can record automation in Maschine's session view.alex.the.forge wrote:We can't find session view anywhere else, but we can find millions of other versions of the arranger.

Can anyone dig up that post? I'd like to see it.
Not being able to record automation into a clip is just.....not what I expect from LIVE.

I believe you can take the recorded automation from session view automation lanes and and copy and paste it into the clips automation lane this is the only way have heard of it working and you have to do every automation lane individually
no one mentioned that so far and i yada yada you cant record it i know...

yes you can copy paste, but this is a PITAskateboardkid wrote:I believe you can take the recorded automation from session view automation lanes and and copy and paste it into the clips automation lane this is the only way have heard of it working and you have to do every automation lane individuallyno one mentioned that so far and i yada yada you cant record it i know...
you can also record to clips with a controller, but it either involves using external VSTs/AUs or hardware and recording it in as MIDI Ctrl change numbers - which means you don't see in the clip envelope which parameter is controlled by it and just have to remember which CC number is associated with which parameter (i.e. the way we used to do it with hardware "back in the day", and the reason we use advanced software like Live to avoid painstaking processes like this), or we have to use a MIDI loopback like IAC or MIDI yoke and send the MIDI to a MIDI channel and then devote an IAC or MIDI yoke channel just to that one spare MIDI track to record the automation and route it to the ABleton device.
So it can be done but is presently a PITA.

Re: How to record automation in to the clips?
OK, so this is obviously an issue for everybody.
Please please fix it Ableton crew... I've just wasted weeks converting and streamlining all my drum parts into MIDI events and drum racks, only to find that there's no way of retaining all my automation for balancing individual drum levels in Session view for live performances.
So this means I'd have been better off dealing with the drum parts as audio and losing control of the modulation parameters...
This really is unexpected! I suppose one should never assume, but I thought this would be a simple issue to resolve early on?
That's quite a disappointment. It's a lot of my work down the tubes...

Live 9 will definitely have it.
Re: How to record automation in to the clips?
Just get Maschine.
Re: How to record automation in to the clips?
I'm sure most people agree that the "percentage-based" pen-draw-only is a lot more obnoxious than that.lol.hurlingdervish wrote:has anybody actually used a synth that records automation into clips?
it is by far the most obnoxious thing in the world...
its left out for a reason in my opinion

Just get Maschine or wait for Bitwig Studio?
