Re: Deadmau5 remix contest?
@beats: Yeah, I'm totally over Beatport ever since my last experience with them. Wanted a Boysnoize compilation that was ~$25-$30 for 11 tracks. An album DL should not cost more than typical vinyl/CD costs!! Insert comments reflecting my righteous indignation here.
@dave: I didn't think through the part about this track not being released yet. If I was a huge fan, I would certainly grab the stems if they were free and attempt to assemble the track on the cheap for myself. Then again, in that case I would probably also buy the CD/vinyl once it was out anyway so what's the real loss?
I do like the whole round-2 DJ mix concept. It definitely weeds out all the DJ-hating producers out there... wait, check out the "comments about DJs" section in Deadmau5's wiki:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deadmau5
did I just create some sort of mini wormhole?
I just started on the Green Velvet project, and they took another approach. Apart from the vocal, the stems are all 1-2 bar loops. It would take a lot of effort the recreate the original song; much more than just buying the thing to start with.

Re: Deadmau5 remix contest?
hehe his dj hating was always fun. because somehow, he's right, and somehow, he's wrong (and admits to it). he tries to combine the best of a live artist, a producer, and a dj in his own way. his big + for a dj: perfect sounding music (it's produced in the studio) in a good variety (if the dj is good) for a long long period without any issues. he tries to get there from a more live artist standpoint.
listening to one of it's latest sets, one can clearly hear when he's more "just djing", and when he's more doing live mashups and all. he sure aknowledges that it's impossible to be a live act at full 100% energy each night for hours. stepping back, mixing some good produced tracks (from himself) in an easy way helps there.
what i noticed the most, though, is how much i would love to get all dj-tracks that way. it would be so awesome to mix that way
and no, you did not create a mini wormhole. that's our swiss cern business, we'll handle that
happy weekend everyone.

I am assuming that deadmau5 is a very nice fellow, and I am glad that he has achieved success. I just heard my first song of his on Pandora. It seemed to be composed entirely with a single note, and reminded me of the bass line from "Running with the Devil" Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. Bomp. I thumbs downed it, and the following track was Lemon Jelly which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I too judge an artist's entire catalog based on a single track pulled at random from a computer playlist generator. It's the only way to be sure.

Seconded. Plus, I can only hear low freqs. However, I <3 bees.beats me wrote:mojofunk wrote:I am assuming that deadmau5 is a very nice fellow, and I am glad that he has achieved success. Kindof sounds like the actual tune. My problem is I only fart in the key of F. Cant replicate the track.UKRuss wrote:I pharted into Nerve and it gave me a mau5beat over which I laid the vocal stem. Works.

Maybe a quick trip to prison is in order? It might just lower your F an octave though...Mint Invader wrote:Kindof sounds like the actual tune. My problem is I only fart in the key of F. Re: Deadmau5 remix contest?
The thing is this - you can dislike the dude, dislike his music, dislike his stupidity (such as saying people can use his Image Line loops in FL Studio if they pay him $100 a pop), dislike his use of profanity on web blogs when probably 9 out of 10 guys would beat him to a pulp if he said this stuff to their face at the pub.
Given his success and fame, he gets the last laugh though - somebody is buying his records and paying to see his live shows, in spite of what many of us think. Sadly.
This is one reason why I have quit hating on the guy. The minute everyone loves him and there is no controversy surrounding him or what he does, his career will probably be close to finished. As they say, ain't no such thing as bad publicity, only PUBLICITY.
Unless someone actually personally knows the guy, has his cell number on speed dial etc, I think it's wrong to speculate about whether he knows this competition is in existence or not, record labels often pull things and 'forget' to inform. Then again, you don't like the terms, stay away. Indaba has tons of free remix competitions, such as the recent Linkin Park etc, if you don't want to pay. Personally, I try to avoid Beefpork at all costs.

Interviewer - "So tell me about the bassline in the track that got you off the ground. Some say that was your greatest work"
Me - "Well I had a terrible case of the mudbutt and noticed the bowl movements were in the key of E flat. So I recorded it and put it through a bit crusher... ya. Im famous for taking a shit."
