Is not having Dropbox functionality really as big a dick up these whiners' collective asses as the constant yammering about it would suggest?

They wanted to do something cool, they tried, they decided that their implementation was not as cool as it could or should be, so they scrapped it. There are worse decisions to be made.

I understand being frustrated if you were really looking forward to it, but if you bought Live on the premise that it would be there and complained early on requesting a refund, you might have a leg to stand on. at this point, it is just complaining really. 'false' advertising? share was in Live for a little bit (beta, yes...but there) when they saw that they couldn't do what they wanted, they pulled it and ads with it displayed. i think that is as much as we should ask. they meant to release it...it wasn't some bait and switch.

Angstrom wrote:Ableton quite obviously got something terribly wrong on share, and didn't realise until it was too late. It's marvellous that they bit the PR bullet and withdrew it before it really blew up in their faces (with 200,000 users complaint bitterly), but a bit more communication would have helped them over this hump.

There are obvious user questions which could be answered loosely enough by the marketing department to buy them some time and goodwill.

EG

1: why it was removed from a product after featuring as a key selling point?
It was in the movies for L8, the promo material, and then just gone. A loose explanation, even a fake one would have bought them good-will.
Eg:" it had to be removed after the european parliament asked us about it's filesharing legality" or " we realised the users would pay too much bandwidth, so we are looking for a cheap option for you"
Any old bullshit would have mollified the users.
Yes, I am without any morals whatsoever when it comes to business, so be glad I don't work for Ableton ;)

2: where will it return?
Live 8 users now think they do not own share, do they, don't they? What??
A clear communication that "share will be reinstated for all Live 8 owners as soon as it is repaired" would calm those fears.
But instead share is like a mad relative, locked in the attic. Nobody talks about him, but his presence lurks there like a dark cloud.

A clear concise press release addressing the obvious concerns seems an obvious move here. The most baffling part about share's vanishing is the lack of that PR cover story. Silence is worse than BS in these cases, for Ableton.

I mostly feel sorry for Bernd on this one, and his team of course. He seems like a nice guy to me (I met him once) and really hope that his pet project can return as a triumph, from whatever voyage it has gone off on.
Very well put.

In the advertizing movie it looks pretty cool. but its not necessarily a daw intern feature.. its rather something like an own ableton server service ...which might be a good thing, but defently not high in importance when it comes to daw/ stage tool functionality...

from L8 features they only one they could have dropped anyway.. the wise move to drop the max for live integration would have caused a nerd rebellion..so that has to be pushed thru... and all other new features are core standard daw functionality.. things like group tracks, or groovquantize or propper stretching are daw standards and actually the only important additions to L8..
max patchers dont have a different live now, just because the integration.
And for ableton users its just a little more easy to get into max... an introduction.. but to handle the beast you have to deal with max !
The little ableton graphic support dont makes such a big difference ..
However.. one day i might try mfl.. when i ve more time by hand.. after the pain its probably some fun ...

For what it's worth, when I bought L8, Share was not announced.
I'll have to check out dropbox, it looks like that will solve the problem of online collaboration for the time being.

I couldn't agree more, when I upgraded that was one of the features that really pushed me to buy the upgrade to, Live needds to integrate some sort of ftp, dropbox, mobile me syncing ability. in Dreamweaver you can connect to your ftp so that you can update the files and website directly from the app. This is the integration Live needs I for one have my own host with FTP and also a mobile me as a solution for delivering my sessions to my partner. Oh well :-( for now I stick to , Collect all and Save , Zip then upload then send email with link lol

don't piss off artists, they have creative ways of expressing anger.

I'd say this issue should be a plausible way to get a refund for the upgrade. I fear that if they did put out a share it wouldn't be very good, it would just be something to fill the feature ASAP.

What exactly do you want the Share feature to be able to do?

Is it just a one-button solution to Collect All And Save and uploading the zip?

say we're working together on a track, I make a .als, I upload it so you can download it, tweak it then upload it again. we'd do all this within the Live GUI. so yeah, a one button kind of thing.

or maybe Tom Cosm makes an instructional set, he can upload it and direct people to go grab it.

IIRC it was to be a service you pay for by the month.

Ms live mesh sync is another option which we use. It's free but no cloud storage ie you both have to be online. No storage limits though . There's a single file size limit but that never becomes an issue.

I believe that the staff of ableton the given possibility of transfer would have to re-insert for example like in the version beta having a serveur like the native ones instruments  ( for future version of live ableton)

We now have over 100 users in the group who you can chat with. This means that someone who knows Ableton will always be on the other line if you have a question and they will respond immediately. In addition, we have 20 members in our "sharing cloud" who have shared over 1 gigabyte of live sets and files.
