I meant primitive as in first generation. They're limited by the hardware they're running on. The actual theoretical envelope shapes are fine - the problem is that the processors aren't quick enough to give a nice shape at all speeds. It's much the same with the Prophet T8, Juno 106, Jupiter-6 and others. Compare the sound of those EGs to hardware EGs or later machines with faster processors and the difference is surprising.

But the Xpander is a nice synth though... but for bass I'd probably use something else.

Meh, again, the actual sound of the bass you can get from it makes any lag not an issue IMO. For playing along to a drum machine or real drummer, I wouldn't bother though, and most definitely the Memorymoog an Evolver have much more snappy and responsive envelopes. The Oberheim filter and oscillator sound has a certain quality for bass, and it has it's uses.

Instead of SEM, I placed an order for Monomachine.

SEM will have to wait.

Maybe some users can post audio examples of previously mentioned synths?
If you own one of these synths, it can be very handy to post an example of an angry bass sound you've made with it.

I'm just mentioning this because dark - angry - filthy - ... are all still pretty subjective without actually hearing the sound.

I would love to HEAR the evolver, Xpander, SEM, ... doing some nasty basses

How bout a JP8000 / JP8080? Supersaw is narsty! Getting the Vengence Soundbank for it added tons of wicked bass sounds to it.

A bit OT here, the last Computer Music I bought had an "in the studio" with DJ Fresh showing one of the tunes he was working on, it was virtually all various instances of Operator layered together. Eye opening for me as I like a bit of D'n'B and own Operator but never use it.

The old Roland stuff is indeed cool... Do they have anything near as good from their new range. I thought the Gaia looked kinda' interesting. But buying anything second hand here in Ireland is very expensive and I had one bad experiences.

I could get something like that shipped form the UK I guess.

That is interesting... If some one like that is using it it must be very cool. I mean, the sounds that Bad Company were getting back in the day were class, was ahead of the curve imo. I always thought that "operator" was a good synth to be honest. However, I'd never heard anything (to my knowledge anyway) that sounded twisted and brutal, it's always been demoed as as a really good dance synth.I'll have to reevaluate it now... Does anyone have any example of dark track produced with it?

Can't remember the track he was working on and I've not got the disk at the moment to re-watch it. Not even sure it was a dark tune, it just surprised me that such a D'n'B legend was giving Operator so much love.

Novation Super Bass Station (hardware version). Fairly nice distortion on it. Downside is occasionally the notes stick, on mine anyway.

I've seen a few bass station demos always quite liked the sound and they are a decent price on ebay. As regarding notes sticking - happens from time to time on nearly all of my VST stuff, so I'm used to it.

Yeah, sounds FM as hell. Not bad, but not the heaviest bass sound.
I get that you like it, but I don't personally think FM synths are that great for that "Dubstep" style bass sound.
Too clinical.

That thing looks fun, I'm an analogue hardware fan though.
To me anyway hardware = analogue gear, and software is where digital lives!

An intuitive and fun to use hardware sequencer is hard to beat.

Any examples of your amazingly angry and heavy bass? Myself and the OP im sure would really like to hear it.

All the good bass in DNB is sampled and processed many times over. Doesnt matter where it came from.

Destroyed dancefloors the world over care even less about whether its FM or analogue.
