Help with adjusting latency

I'm trying to follow Ableton's directions to adjust overall latency, and I must be missing something, but the instructions say to connect Live's hardware output to its input before recording a sample.

This would clearly create a feedback loop (i.e. an ear-piercing, tweeter blowing scream) in any recording device as, indeed, it does with Live.

What are they asking me to do?

I can't even connect the input to the output without the wailing starting, as I would fully expect....

By the way, I did already disable "monitor input thru live" in preferences.

I am using a Terratec dmx6 fire on a pc.

Hi e.

it doesn't create a feedback if the "Monitor through Live" switch is off.

1. You play a clip in Live.
2. It's signal goes trough the soundcard out which is connected (with an external wire) to the audio in of the soundcard.
3. In another track, choose 'Live In" as record type and the right input channel(s). If you press the monitor button in the track you'll see the grayed level of the incoming signal but you cannot hear because the "Monitor through Live" switch is off.

I had the gain turned up on my input, which caused the problem. I thought it had to do with the routing, but it everything is O.K. now.

BTW, I'm having great fun with Live
