Done it....!

It's a set and forget for unwarped clips sadly as you can;t use clip envelopes, but you can modulate the device from a midi controller instead...

For warped clips you can draw in the follow actions so you can set a follow action per clip to happen at clip end...

Clip Envelopes for un-warped clips has been at the top of my feature request list, right alongside Follow Actions when clip ends. I wish Ableton would implement these features. It opens up so many possibilities.

I agree with you that having actual hours, minutes, seconds fields is the best way to implement the time delay. Easier to use than 00:00:00.

The percentage change is really icing on the cake, just being able to play clips in random order would be great.

I guess you can use "blank" or muted clips to insert silence to achieve a time-delay before the next clip is heard.

Thanks again for working on this.

No worries, i agree on the blank clips idea but then if you want the random effect of jumping between clips what might happen is the next clip triggered is audio rather than blank, or two blanks in a row.... I like the way you put the idea together that the amount of silence is linked to the clip that's just played....

I don't know how accurate you need it to be with unwarped clips as setting the quantization to none means that the trigger happens when the clip stops, this is then delayed exactly the time dialed in (using the three boxes) and the next clip is triggered based on it's quantization settings....

My goal is to use Live as a random clip triggering device, by extending the Follow Actions to un-warped, un-looped, non-quantized clips of varying lengths. The clips I play are rarely looped, & many of the things I do loop are not tempo-based, just sounds.

I want Live to "play itself", but do not want to be locked into the Arrangement view/traditional DAW way of working. This would be great for pure sound-based & ambient music, or to add non-rhythmic elements to rhythmic songs.

The addition of the time-delay allows for a more spacious triggering of clips, rather than one after another after another. This allows the session to "breath" a little, or a lot.

I'm pretty sure that you get all this already, so forgive me for explaining the obvious. I'm also not sure this answers your questions, but then again I'm not sure I completely understand your explanation!

Ok cool, it was the non rythmic bit that was throwing me, i work solely with warped clips so having them all in sync is important...

So with a bit more work in different follow action choices i think i'm done....

Think you might like this....

The random works within the block of clips currently playing.....

I have wanted that for so long! I hope the folks at Ableton are taking note.

So, just to make sure that it is all making sense in my addled brain: for un-warped clips it can trigger the next clip in the group of clips when the clip ends & utilize the time-delay, but it can't select a specific clip to play (via it's number in the group) because that's accessed via clip envelopes?

I'm not understanding the distinction between what can & can't happen with warped & un-warped clips.

Can you elaborate on the following:

Hi ya,

Yes exactly that, i can run a mathematical formula based on the current playing clip number to determine the next clip to be played but to play a particular clip number it has to read it from the clip envelope that's been drawn, which as you know is sadly not possible with unwarped clips...

So for unwarped clips your options are....

Play Again
Play Below
Play First
Play Last
Play Again

And all give you the ability to have a delay before the next clip although with unwarped clips this will be the same amount each time... I could work some form of randomising function into it a later date but i don't really know what would be the relevant values, eg. i'm guessing a 23hr 59min 59secs delay is probably inappropriate?

I had fun last night just dragging a thousand Loopmasters drum loops into track one and turning off loop for them all and setting the device to random...

Excellent! That pretty much satisfies my requirements for Follow Actions to function as a random music generator. Thank you!

Do all the unwarped clips in a group get assigned the same delay? How is this delay amount entered/determined -via the time-fields?

It would be cool to be able to program un-warped clips like you can with warped clips, but the control your device allows with un-warped clips is just fantastic.

Now I just have to get M4Live...

Sadly all the unwarped clips in the track get the same delay unless it's changed by you manually via midi, you could have a dial assigned to the seconds for example to do it...

And yes, there's three live number boxes, they are seperately modulatable so you could have a dial for hours, another for minutes etc.

OK, so unwarped can have a time delay, but all clips in a group will have the same delay?

The time delay can be modulated by clip envelope or by midi, if you had the first clip in a group as a warped track, be it a beat long then you could trigger that clip to set the delay for the group, i think this is probably the bext way round things until clip envelopes are implemented in unwarped clips (if it ever is...)

No worries man.....

I'm sure with more work you could build a table of delays that were recalled from within the Max device based on the clip number, you would need to implement a pattr object that you'd then need to play a clip set the delay and save the time delay, this would then be recalled when the clip number was played... The downside is you'd need to change the delay each time you changed a clip in the set....
