Videos for training

Post by Cthulhu » Wed Oct 06, 2010 12:47 pm

Hi all, new to Ableton from the guitar/Logic world. Looking for some food training vids to supplement the manual (I'm one of them that actually RTFM). Any suggestions? MacProVideo? Any others? Thanks all.
Logic 9, Ableton Live Suite 8, MacBook Pro, Mac Pro, Mac OSX 10.6.5., iPad, Apogee Duet, UAD-2, NI Komplete, Edirol PCR 800. two Telecasters, one Les Paul, one SG, one Strat, Fender O-Bass, one Hodson, three cats.

MacProVideo is awesome and I recommend the monthly subscription service because it gives you access to their entire huge library of tutorials past, present, and future.

There's also

http://www.groove3.com

Where at least one member of this forum, Timothy Allan (possibly 2, forge?) has Live tutorials available that are really helpful.

erm.. I was there before Tim! I feel somehow offended at you Beatsme, I'd remember if you made a damn video series! ;-)

@ OP - the benefit of going with us is you can also ask us questions via this forum and PMs in addition! Where are Macprovideo? ;-)

Sorry, man. TA's been pimpin' his house production tutorials recently so of course he's the first that comes to mind. At least I vaguely remember your 1997 tutorials that are on there. :)

Does groove3 have an iPad app tutorial viewer? MacProVideo does and it's an awesomeness that goes beyond words...especially if your computer screens are already gummed up with music related windows. Also I'm not a huge fan of the browser based interface. It's very Microsoft "everything through IE" ish. Minor complaint I know, but that's how we roll here.

Hi Cthulhu

Yes you can find some sample videos on YT here: http://www.youtube.com/user/groove3Inc

the best deal is for $30 you can watch the entire Groove3 collection (including for other programs like Logic, Pro tools etc) for a whole month, but I think to just rent 1 title for a month is around the $10-15 mark

Actually my last one only came out a few months ago, maybe I forgot to tell the forum about it.

But I've just finished one on Operator (and mainly synthesis in general) which should be going up in the next few days if anyone's interested! ;-)

Yep. Or at least I know they did an iPhone one, so I assume they did iPad too…. but I'll check…

As long as you are lucky not needing any support from MacProVideo when trying to use their mandatory so-called “N.E.D-player” software to view the tutorials, they are fine.

The last year I´ve bought well over a dozen of their tutorials, and at first I didn´t need any support.

But the last three tutorials that I bought together I can´t view at all, the N.E.D.-player just doesn´t work. And MacProVideo doesn´t respond to e-mails.

So right now I´m sorry I can´t recommend MacProVideo.

I haven't had any issues with their player on my Mac or iPad, but that would suck if I did.

I also used to buy their tutorials thanks to my American/Producer need to own and horde things but then determined their subscription service is the much better and cheaper option. They have an insane amount of music and non-music related tutorials and trying to keep up would probably cause me to go bankrupt. It also allows me to check out things I don't have or haven't dove into that deeply because in my head the subscription says it's free (paid for) so why not. I would probably never check out those tutorials if I had to pony up for them 1 by 1.

Yes the dreaded NED player from Mac Pro Videos. Their videos are good, but that player really sucks. I could not get it to work on my PC and the support is god awful. I was just totally fobbed off. In fact, it has never been resolved to this day. So I'll never go to them again under any circumstances :(. But that's just my experience...As OP said I personally couldn't recommend them.

As people said the groove3 stuff is really good. I learned loads from these guys. Again, their is a "player" but it works pretty well. :)

I really liked Tom Cosm's tutorials. Hours of tutorials on DVD for a very reasonable price (and with very good support I might add). He breaks everything down really well.

Very good stuff here too.

I wonder if "Mac" Pro Video doesn't really care all that much about PC users and just reluctantly offers a player that they're not all that interested in troubleshooting either, similar to how there's iTunes for PCs which PC users complain about endlessly but Apple isn't exactly front and center with fixing or acknowledging problems. If anybody has the right to answer all tech problems with "buy a Mac" it's Apple.

The MacProVideo tutorials are well worth the investment. The subscription is reasonable, even if for only a single month; however if the budget allows, the download versions are searchable and of much better quality. The Core Live 801 is like having a video manual on hand; and the electronica ones are good for getting ideas for workflow, even if that isn't your genre.

I personally have never had an issue with the NED player on Mac; and when I did run it under Windows, the issues, while very annoying, did not take away from the information within the tutorials themselves.

Plus the subscription service is browser based (or at least it was last time I used it). At $25 for an all-you-can-watch buffet for one month, what have you got to lose?

Nick's Tutorials are excellent if you have Suite and want some more advanced insights. I learned a great deal from him; however do recommend having a strong foundation in the basics first.
