love to hate them :p

Love them for... no temperatures, no noise, no vibration problems, big speeds, bit lees of weight, less power usage (= more battery for laptops and more ECO)

Hate them because i cant afford them ;p
the price per GB is very high and also i dont trust them yet for long time reliability (the current SSD technologies)

Anyway this shit is the future...
I may upgrade all my systems in 1,5-2 years when the competition will be bigger and the cost way less ;-)

IP, they life for years, no need to fear. the rest of your computer will die long before the ssd. + the right ssd will report you when it comes to an end, so you know in advance.

about the cost. well, consider your laptop feeling slow, thinking about buying a new one. ssd is much cheaper, and gives you more speedup and highend features (no vibration problems, no noise).

but this winter, the new intel ssds will come out, that are planned to be around 1-1.5$ per gb. that will mean a 300gb ssd for around 400$, if we're lucky. pricy, yes, but not out of reach.

i switched to all-ssds about two years ago. i could not move back, they're absolutely awesome. worth every penny i paid back then.

doesn't make me auto-rich, sadly..

as said, best investment ever made.

it's like when people buy macs. they think it's worth the additional money. for me, that's ssds. cost much, but worth it.

:) (actually, even in those movies, we only host the money, we don't have it. the evil corrupt mafia bosses and such have it. so if you're rich, you host your money here. doesn't mean i can use it)

well, with intel, you get stickers:

and in general, ssds have an awesome title song:

you could combine it with a mac to get all of it (oh, and a turtle-neck)

Well, blimey! That looks like it could potentially... just... work! I'm sold; I'm getting all three. I just have to make a
minor bank withdrawal. Actually; my bank is in your area, I believe.

glad they did "just not boot", and not actually tried to. you don't want your needle to scratch your disk if any square millimeter on it is your relevant data.

but yeah, ssd ftw on stage.

What are the read/write speeds of these drives though? SSDs still vary pretty heavily on write speeds, and even read can be slower.
Any links to articles about this new batch of cheaper SSDs?

readwrites don't really matter. latency does. there the intels are about the best so far (0.65ms random read access). so even a "slow" ssd would be much faster anyways.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/3965/inte ... s-revealed

250MB/s read speed, 170MB/s write speed. up to 50K/40K IOPS. one of my harddrive made 4 write iops a second for random writes.. so a factor 1000 and more, there, easily (10000 with these numbers, but lets wait for benchmarks).

the intels might not be the highest end this time, but they sure will be the best price/performance/storage offering. and they're reliable so far. can't say they last 10 years, only have them for 1 / 1.5 years, respectively.

got a 60GB samsung SSD for system (win7x64) and a wd scorpio black 500GB for data in my laptop; works awesome.
boot time until desktop is fully accessible: 14 sec, including logon. live opens in 5 sec. :-)

higly recommended!
