Back to basics: playing multi-timbral instruments

Is there any workaround to play the various channels of a multi-timbral hardware or vst instrument from a single MIDI track that lets the MIDI Channel values of the Notes coming from the master keyboard pass through unchanged? Like it can be done in Cubase with the "Any" channel setting since the early XIXth century...
