Trouble Editing Video

Post by joviwonder » Sun Oct 17, 2010 7:20 am

I need help...
I'm trying to edit a video clip with Ableton but I ran into a problem. For some reason it's not showing up in the sample editor.
I dragged the video clip into arrangement view and it popped up in another window just fine... but isn't there supposed to be something that looks like an audio file? It just shows up blank, both in the arrangement view and sample editor.
I used a quicktime file as was recommended.
I would love to be able to get rolling on this... ideas anyone???
Many thanks.

I am trying to re-score a promo video for a game I am playing for a contest they are having. You get to score the audio portion to the video. I have been able to bring the .mov file (quicktime format, also offered wmv format) into Live but when you put it into session view it appears like an audio clip in the track. In Arrangement view it displays similar to an audio clip but there should be sprocket holes in the title bar. Read the manual on page 243 as it explains this.

Now I have to figure out how to line up any audio I record or use for the video clip so everything syncs/plays right sound-wise. The clip does have sound effects, just no music. So I know what I'll be playing with over the next week to see if I can make anything of it and only have till 25th of Jan. to finish it up and get it posted to youtube.

@joviwonder, does your movie have audio on it? It it's a silent movie you won't see any waveform. If it should have audio on it, try using a different codec for the movie file. What codec are you currently using? Are you on Mac or PC?

@darkenedsoul. Video is only available in Arrangement view, in Session View an imported movie behaves like an audio clip. The fact that it's looking and feeling like an audio clip in Arrange View leads me to think you dragged it into Session first. Live would have made an .asd file from Session View and thereafter treated the movie as an audio-only file. To fix, delete the movie from your Live Set, navigate to it in Finder/Explorer and trash it's .asd file. Then import the movie into Arrange View and all should work.

Hi,

Initially I did drag it into session view then another to arrangement view and deleted the session view clip after playing it (both session/arrangement). The clip I have has sound effects in it as well as the video content. All I want to try and do is put some music to it to re-score it. I did find the *very* short chapter in the manual related to video starting at page 243. It gave me some information but I need to get back onto that system and load the clip into arrangement view. I assume I'll be working mainly in arrangement view or can audio be recorded from clips in session view that would sync up with the clip in arrangement view? That's my main concern as is rendering the whole video out with the audio I choose to add to it (if I get it done in time lol).

Thanks,

Mike

Once you have the video in Arrange View (the video's sound fx will play as if it were an audio-only clip), you can use any combination of audio clips from either Session or Arrange, or both.

Yes you can render out a new video that contains the existing audio, plus your new audio no problem. In the Export Audio/Video dialog box, switch Create Video File on, and set the encoder settings that you want for your movie.

Sweet Pitch, that's pretty much what I perused over in the manual. I was going to pick up the Ableton 8 Power book (more wordy version of manual IMHO but has some ok stuff in it too, was hoping for a lot more out of it but hey, what can you do. I also have a few of nicks video tutorials I bought awhile ago and haven't gone back to them lol.....been slacking way to damn much.

Anyways, thanks for the image in the post! Much appreciated. Now to get off my ass and work on some music for this game promo (new content coming soon, they have a contest to re-score it so I figured if I can get motivated enough maybe I try it!).
